The professional trick with adjustable curtain rods is to buy them and install them so you end up with an invisible connection. I always select a length that will allow me to have mostly the thicker rod exposed, while the smaller rod is hidden in one corner and always covered by the gathered curtain. I have even bought the longest rods, 2 of them, and connected them in the middle while hiding the connection with a center bracket. There is nothing that shouts more "amateur and cheap" curtains than when you see the connection between the smaller and the thicker rod. However, the color is not exactly the same as in the product pictures. In my eyes, the real color of the rod is a bit less golden, more like a mix of gold, bronze & brass.
