can tap water be used in this iron?

Tap water can be used in any Iron. However tap water should never be used in any appliance, from irons to coffee makers, to steaming devices. The manufactures explain damage from tap water. Minerals in tap water will eventually plug up any appliances with heavy deposits and will plug holes and reduce heating efficiency. Use only Distilled water!!

does this iron have auto shut off

Yes! The iron will automatically shut in a horizontal position without moving it, or accidentally tip the iron over, it will automatically stop heating after 30 seconds. The Power Indicator will blink to let you know that the iron has stopped heating. In a vertical position (on its heel rest) without moving it, the iron will automatically turn off after 15 minutes. The Power Indicator will blink to let you know that the iron has stopped heating.

Can you use tap water in it?

Yes, I've been using tap water. Works great!

Can you see or tell how much water is in reservoir?

No. I have to hold it at all different angles to the light to figure out if I need to add water, and then I cannot tell when I've added enough. Very frustrating.
