Should work with the monitor matched the square input end of the USB. Regular USB has two different  connecting ends. Which end do you need to input  for the monitor?

Need to connect my 2012 macair to a dell usb-c dock.  Can I use the following configuration.  Mini display to hdmi, then the hdmi to usbc to the dock?

No. The female USB on this adapter is for a type C USB port. Most thumb drives are a type A USB port.
