One chromatic octave contains 12 keys (7 "natural" (white) tones+5 "flat/sharp" (black). The "extra" one is the same as the start note, but three octaves higher. Octave (meaning eight) refers more to the eight tones in the diatonic (do-re-mi....) scale. If you notice, as you move from one tonic (base) note to its octave in the most recognized diatonic scale, the major scale, you pass five keys along the way that are not played. They are part of the diatonic major scale starting from other keys. By the way, the frequency of each octave doubles by powers of two. The F-natural above the first F-natural vibrates at double the frequency. The third F-natural on this instrument vibrates at double the frequency of the second and four times the frequency of the first. There is not an earphone jack, but it is not terribly loud, bit it is a lot of fun and easy to play! **Q: I received the melodica and the high keys have a much slower response, is that a normal behavior or a defect?
