When you remove the heatsink from the CPU, you try to twist them apart, going sideways and never pull the heatsink up off the CPU. That procedure usually works but I actually pulled the CPU out of its socket after several attempts to twist it off. Luckily, it was an Intel CPU and not an AMD CPU, which uses pins. I examined the old thermal paste. It had the consistency of clay. The PC was purchased in 2003 and so the thermal paste was almost 20 years old. The IBM PC’s MOBO had only died recently and I wanted the Intel P4 2.4 GHz as a spare part in case I needed it as well as the CPU cooler. I had another PC I assembled from cannibalized parts from 3 legacy PCs and while it was easy to remove the this CPU cooler (heatsink+fan) from the CPU, that was because the thermal paste was completely solid, or dried out. Arctic MX-4 claims 8-year durability and is nonconductive. Use the pentadot method for applying. There are YouTube videos to aid you. **Q: would the x5 be a better choice?** A: It depends on your application, I've been using MX5 for years and have great results, MX5 Silver is probably only a degree or two cooler than MX4, but MX5 is a conductive product and you need to be careful with application. MX4 is a recommended set it and forget it product with no risk to your components as it is not electrically conductive. With MX5 I replace it every year when I do my annual dusting of the system, and that requires removal of the CPU cooler.
