Does it have to be in close proximity to the smart lock? i don't care for the looks of it and i'd like to mount it around 20 feet away.

The intended use case is for a few feet max and will work with metal / security doors. You could probably get away with 10 ft if your door is wood, otherwise I suggest no more than 5 ft. When testing, be sure to test multiple times. You can check the signal on your phone with a bluetooth scanning app when the keypad is in setup mode. A RSSI of less than -70dBm will not work reliably.

What if it malfunctions, how do you get in?

My keypad stopped functioning after a couple of months. Unless you use the app on your phone or carry your key too, you will be out of luck when the keypad malfunctions. The only reason I purchased the keypad was precisely so as not to have to carry my phone or the key. Please note that getting a replacement shipped from August is a tedious and slow process despite the fact that approximately 25% of the reviews are complaining about the same problem - the keypad malfunctions very often.

Are the numbers backlit?

Yes... They light up in red after you touch the keypad. First number can be tricky (it doesn't detect motion or anything like that), but you can hit the bottom button to activate the lights. I'm pretty happy with it.

How many digits can/must be used in the code? I need to be able to use codes more robust than just 4 digits.

I got all my codes set up with 6 digits; not sure what the max is since 6 digits is just cumbersome enough for me to want to shorten it.
