No timer = A++
Great portable sound machine. Does not have a timer which was a must for us. Has 3 sounds but the white/brown noise is the only one we use. Very small and easy to travel with. Have purchased 4 so far for various things and will be purchasing more for travel!Original purchase was for our son’s daycare - to give the teachers extra around the room.Second purchase was for home and travel when little ones wanted to sleep outside of their room (living room camping etc).Third (future) purchase will be for work travel and home office - so I don’t have to have the TV on YouTube with white noise.Battery life is great, runs all night for 3-4 nights before needing a charge. Full charge doesn’t take too long either.

A good product
Have used it for a couple of nights now, and it seems to be working for the purpose we wanted.The noise is loud to drown out the noises we wanted but not loud enough to be a distraction to sleeping. It a great size to not take up much room, and at this time it's strong enough to take a couple of bumps.

Love it
Love it especially with a case. Well made. Compact size but big sound. Likely doesn't last through a full night's sleep but stays running plugged in. A must have for traveling that won't get fried since it charges via USB.

QUIETER than my old white noise machine
Back in the old days, when I lived in Austin, Texas, and not everyone had air conditioning (it was a LONG time ago), I slept with a fan in the window to try and keep cool at night. It helped ever so slightly. But the interesting result was that the sound of the fan drowned out the sound of the neighborhood, thereby decreasing the incidence of noise intrusion into my sleep. I found that even after I actually HAD air conditioning, I missed the sound of the fan. First I used a tower-type air purifier type thing thinking at least that would be DOING something besides making noise, but that unit became another thing to take care of, cleaning the filter, dusting it, and moving it out of the way when I had company. I happened across the Marpac noise machines and started using those. LOVE THEM, but they didn't provide much in the way of controls - and they were LOUD. They eventually made a smaller "travel" model, with various international plugs and dual voltage, which I purchased and took with me all over the world. These had better volume controls and the ability to change the type of sounds (rain, waves, etc.) Ah ha, hotels now became more bearable: No more elevator pings, less chatter from the neighbors and less hallway interference. Then, I accidentally forgot to change my plug adapter from a foreign trip for a US trip. Shocking. I had to sleep au naturel. It drove me crazy, so I got out the next day and went to a Best Buy store. They don't really sell over the counter white noise machines. So I purchased a small, portable baby sleep machine, which I still take with me for travel because it operates on 3 AAA batteries so I don't need to charge it. But when I got home, I went back online to Marpac and found they made a smaller version of my old sleep noise machine with fewer bells and whistles. It is MUCH smaller than the old one I used to bring with me on trips, and is also much quieter. Yet somehow, it works very well. I'm sleeping as well as ever, but can't sleep without it. So between the portable battery operated one and the USB charged one - I am sleeping like a baby - at home and abroad. LOVE these machines and recommend them to everyone who is sleep challenged. Could just be the ambient noise in your room/house/hotel that's keeping you awake. But, beware, it's habit forming.

Updated Review after 2 years 10 months
I hated this thing the first time we used it (see below), but we were desperate so we kept it. THIS BECAME MY FAVORITE THING! It just died and I bought another directly from Marpac to see if it would look different based on a lot of fake-warning reviews. It's the exact same thing, made in China. The only difference with the new one is the buttons are not recessed, which I hope doesn't end up being a problem because we toss this thing in a bag and take it everywhere. The sound quality still isn't fantastic but if it's not up crazy loud I learned to deal with it (I also bought myself custom earplugs as we share a room and I don't love the sound). It creates a consistent, familiar sound for our child which has improved nap and nighttime success for years. We charge it during the day and it lasts 12+ hours at night. If yours doesn't, exchange it right off the bat. They seem to have quality control issues but its still been worth it to us and I tell all my friends about it, I just tell them to give it a good test first. Crossing my fingers for a few more years out of the new one.Original Review Oct 2016:A great idea but a TERRIBLE sound in my opinion; I find it quite stressful and it is supposed to be soothing for both me and my sleep-deprived baby. Other reviews mentioned the need for a simple on/off button; all you do is hold it down for 3 seconds (then let go and wait 2 seconds for it to turn on), it's quite simple, I see no need to change that. The range of sound is good, it can be fairly quiet or loud depending on your preference. The size is great, very portable. The USB option is nice and it seems to be charging normally. The ocean sound is a whooshing noise that gets quieter and louder; I hate it. The bright white noise (I assume) just about makes my eye twitch, and the deep white noise is barely tolerable... it really just sounds like a TV that lost it's signal and got left on. I was counting down the hours til it arrived, I'm so disappointed. I'll be ordering the Dohm with the actual fan in it to get the sound that I hope (fingers crossed) really will be soothing. This one is just too electrical, I am looking for mechanical white noise. Back to the giant fan on the floor in our bedroom for a few days. Sigh.

Great for baby
Great for the baby! My son loves this and falls asleep to it. Works great! Great sound quality and surprised with how loud it can go! Definitely recommend with a newborn! Also great for newborn pictures to keep them sleeping or even just calm!

Packs a Lot in Small Size
This little machine packs a lot of punch. I brought it in my carry-on whike on travel and used it the whole trip. Strong battery life and sounds terrific.
