Ambitous - Practical Coverage of the Application of Salesforce Architecture
Full Disclosure: Teny Thomas (Marketing Coordinator, Packt Publishing) graciously offered to provide me with a review copy of "Becoming a Salesforce Certified Technical Architect: Prepare for the review board by practicing example-led architectural strategies and best practices", by Tameem Bahri, Chief Technology Officer - Europe (Salesforce.com COE), with Capgemini.Chapters include: Chapter 1, Starting Your Journey as a CTA, Chapter 2, Core Architectural Concepts – Data Chapter 3, Core Architectural Concepts – Integration and Cryptography Chapter 4, Core Architectural Concepts – Identity and Access Management Chapter 5, Developing a Scalable System Architecture Chapter 6, Formulating a Secure Architecture in Salesforce Chapter 7, Designing a Scalable Salesforce Data Architecture Chapter 8, Creating a Lean Solution Architecture Chapter 9, Forging an Integrated Solution Chapter 10, Development Life Cycle and Deployment Planning Chapter 11, Communicating and Socializing Your Solution Chapter 12, Practice the Review Board – First Mock Chapter 13, Present and Defend – First Mock Chapter 14, Practice the Review Board – Second Mock Chapter 15, Present and Defend – Second Mock Appendix, Tips and Tricks, and the Way ForwardWhat I Liked:I found this book to be worth the time invested to read it – as it served to deepen my understanding of several areas of concern for the architecture design of Salesforce solutions.1. The numerous architecture artifact examples.2. The robust and non-trivial scale of the problems defined by the scenarios (starting with Chapter-5…)3. Chapter-2’s discussion of BASE vs. ACID: - BASE (Basically Available, Soft State, Eventual consistency) - ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and Durability)4. Chapter-5’s detailed discussion of the requirements and architecture considerations for the Packt United Builder (PUB) global property developer scenario.5. Chapter-6’s detailed discussion from a Security Architect’s perspective – with the detailed requirements and security architecture considerations for the Packt Innovative Retailers (PIR) global digital retailer scenario.6. Chapter-7’s discussion of data architecture – and performance implications of LDVs on the solution design – and mitigation strategies – as part of tThe discussion of the data architecture considerations for the Packt Online Wizz (POZ) online shopping portal scenario.7. The seasoned voice of experience – in guiding the reader through trade-off analysis considerations in considering, evaluating, and selecting solution options for the various areas of concern.8. Chapter-8’s use of the Packt Visiting Angels (PVA) scenario is a fine example of the writing expressing a strongly grounded mentoring-approach – that stresses the importance of understanding the business and technical requirements – and of documenting the architecture design and decisions.9. Chapter-10’s discussion of Center of Excellence (COE) and Design Authority10. Chapter-12’s 1st full mock – Packt Pioneer Auto (PPA) global car rental company scenario.11. Chapter-14’s 2nd full mock - Packt Lightning Utilities (PLU) European utility company scenario.12. Appendix lists of links to: suggested training and study groups; stories & lessons learned; blogs and training providers13. Regardless of whether you ever intend to take the CTA exam – this book provides a broad coverage of architecture considerations – across a number of interesting scenarios – that will help the reader expand and elevate their knowledge of Salesforce solution architecture design.Suggestions for Next Edition1. At 602 pages, I think the length could possibly be trimmed by ~15% - with a sharp editor’s eye toward tightening-up some of the writing.2. There is some repetitious phrasing that could be eliminated (or varied a bit).3. At the end of each chapter, the value of the book could be substantially strengthened by including citations to the Salesforce relevant documentation, articles, blog posts, conference proceedings, release notes, YouTube channel talks, etc. – to provide the reader with links to additional resources to develop a deeper understanding.4. Chapter-2 should include a link to: https://www.salesforce.com/content/dam/web/en_us/www/documents/reports/wp-platform-encryption-architecture.pdf5. Suggest making Integration a stand-alone chapter. Perhaps combining Encryption and Cryptography into a Security Architecture chapter?6. Add a discussion in Chapter-10 to cover SalesForce capabilities for API Observability, Monitoring, Alerting7. The pixel-fidelity of some of the diagrams needs to be substantially improved – see Figure 4.2 and 14.10 for just two examples. Zooming in – and the fidelity of the diagram becomes blurry.

Don't be intimidated by the size of this book, it is worth the read!
Honestly, at first look at this book is a bit intimidating. With 15 Chapters plus a comprehensive appendix, weighing in at just under 600 pages, I was starting to have doubts on whether I would get through it or not. What I found was much more than just a study guide for the CTA exam, but instead, a guide for any Architect or architectural practice team on how to optimize and standardize their processes and artifacts. The chapters are loaded with both examples of how the topic areas related to the CTA Exam but also samples, charts, and diagrams that show how to apply the information in any project. The style the book follows leads the reader through the key sections of the exam, in the way that the Review Board would expect them to be presented, and sections that cover all aspects of a full Enterprise Architecture in a Salesforce solution. The Mock scenarios are a great way to practice what you are learning along the way, can be added to your CTA study group's arsenal of tools, and even, be leveraged to support the hiring process for new Architects to your organization.Personally, I plan to not only use the book to continue my studies toward attaining the coveted CTA certification, but also as a reference guide when working on projects for my customers, and as a measuring post for how prospects coming into my organization think about solution architecture and design.Tameen, thank you for what I am certain was a huge amount of effort to develop and publish this book.

Coach Approved - Salesforce CTA wisdom in a book.
Why would a coach recommend a book on his topic written by someone else? The answer is simple; it is that good and insightful - we even intend to include it as a textbook in our coaching!Written for anyone on their journey, Tameem has done a tremendous job compiling and condensing his wisdom as a talented and seasoned Architect and Salesforce CTA.Throughout 600 pages, you are taken on an easy step-by-step process, from setting the exam’s expectations to understanding core concepts to solutioning and presentation; it’s all in there. Depending on your experience and expertise, you’ll spend more or less time on the more theoretical topics in the book. For those far down their journey, there’s a lot of value in there to validate their approach, refresh their knowledge and get more practice scenarios! The chapters are in a logical order and build-up on each other. After having gone through the book myself, I’d suggest reading the chapters “Starting Your Journey As A CTA” (1), “Communicating and Socializing Your Solution” (11), and “Tips and Tricks, and the Way Forward” first. They will help you better grasp the expectations and plan your studies as you are working through the book.A word of caution, you are not “Becoming a CTA” by merely reading the book and memorizing, nor by using it as the sole reference. To become a CTA, you need to think, design, and communicate like one. The only way known to humanity is experience, in-depth study, transfer and application of knowledge, and continuous deliberate practice. Not everyone will become a CTA, and that’s ok, but the journey will transform you.So buckle up and enjoy the read.

Must-have to prepare for the Review Board
Wow! What a book! I love it. I own quite a few technical books and this one is definitively ranking very high in this list.First of all, I think it's laid down really well. I love the way the author organises all the chapters in a logical order: generic (but important) first, then technical knowledge then review-board tips and tricks. Each technical chapter is coming with a mini-mock scenario that I found great to validate your understanding. This book is helping me organise my knowledge and prepare for the CTA review board notably by identifying my areas of improvement that I wouldn't guess without reading this book.I will keep this book on one side of my desk and read it several times until I feel confident enough to present myself to the review board...
