I poured in hot water and sealed it while the food was heating on the stove. When the food was ready, I poured out the hot water into the dog dish and put the hot food from the stove into the food jar. I put food in at 7am, ate out of it at 12pm, and then finished the soup at 5pm. It was good at 12pm and was still plenty hot to enjoy at 5pm. I highly recommend this. The 25oz holds enough for either 2 meals or to share with another person. There are only a few pieces that have to be disassembled for a easy thorough cleaning.
