Major callbacks to past DC stories, big action, awesome team ups. ONE CORPS!......wait, WHAT are we going to do?!
Venditti is working magic on this title!Story: After the biggest of cliffhangers at the end of volume 1, I was dying to know where volume 2 would pick up. There's a LOT going on in this book, but it's a very coherent story, easy to follow, and fun as hell! I really don't like to spoil any plot points as I like to use these Amazon reviews as a guide as to whether or not I should buy something. I'd like others to be able to use my review as a "should I buy it" guide. The cover and back cover of the book only lets one in on a small portion of what goes on here. Ganthet and Sayd summon the White Lantern, Kyle Rayner, and ask him to bring Hal back to life. Hal, meanwhile, discovers a place where he can once again meet former Lanterns who have died in the line of duty. There, he meets some longtime classic characters! The GL Corps is one their way to Xudar, the homeworld of Tomar Tu to save it from a classic JL villain, but all is not what it seems. We get to see an awesome team up between the GL Corps and the remaining Sinestro Corps survivors from Warworld. They fight against this classic villain until they realize they have been fooled and fallen into a grand trap. Talk about a major callback to pre-Crisis with this one!! No, I'm not going to spoil it, but the trap setter is a jawdropper! (Plus, he looks cool as drawn by Ethan van Sciver) There is a greater plan going on here with a longtime GL enemy who just has to have everything. Major callbacks to classic characters, awesome fights, complex plans, reuniting of the four original human Green Lanterns, some twists, and definitely some humor (mostly coming from Guy) make this tale a standout 5 star book among the rest of DC's lineup (which is still also great). At the end, we get an old Xudarian telling her grandchildren about the day of the attack shown at the beginning of the book. It's really fantastic stuff, and is a great examination of the natures of fear, greed, rage, and will. It has a predictable, but still moving and emotionally evocative ending. Great stuff here!Art: Ethan van Sciver is one of DC's top four artists. He's been around for a long time now and is probably going to go down as the greatest artist ever to work on a Green Lantern title. I LOVE everything he does. No one really has to talk about how good his pencils are. They speak for themselves!! The other artists here, Rafa Sandoval (who did fantastic work on volume 1), and Ed Benes also round out the rest of the issues here with stunningly beautiful art. This title has to be one of DC's most visually impressive books in their entire lineup. I have to mention the talent of Tomeu Morey. This guy is one of the comics industry's powerhouse colorists! For anyone who thinks that the colorist has a less important job than the pencilers or inkers, take a look at this book, particularly the issues penciled by Rafa Sandoval. Morey has colored over 350 issues of comics and his work is stunning! The scenes of John Stewart, Kilowog, and Guy Gardner above the Xudarian city really pop out and shine because of Morey's coloring. The Green Lantern books ought to be the most colorful books in DC's lineup, and this guy is making sure of that! I've never done this in a review before, but I'd like to also mention the excellent lettering of Dave Sharpe. Yeah, it'd be great if we could just have Todd Klein letter every title because he's the "be all, end all" of letterers, but Dave Sharpe does some great work in this book. I would like to see more of his work as well! So, in summation, this book is one beautiful ass book to look at!Overall: I thought that this might follow the volume 2 trend that some Rebirth titles seem to be going with, that is, basically filler tales, until we get to volume 3, but this book told one coherent story, and it was fabulous! I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. Any negatives? In the last issue, the penciler gives the human Lanterns some really, REALLY big chins. Chins that could sink the Titanic! That's about it. Everything else I just loved so much. I can't recommend this enough. Venditti has gold here!
