To get everything optimally clean, you want to lay it in the machine diagonally if possible. I taped two small remotes together to clean them as they would otherwise lay flat. After you plug it in and remove the “remove before using sticker”, the Homesoap is already in automatic mode so if you want 10 minute cleaning only, you are all set to go. Just open the door, shove your nasty stuff in their, and close the door. I have read other reviews as well and need to discuss some things. Corona Virus is not associated with Corona the beer. It is not recommended that you put food or drink (packaged or not) into the Homesoap. Also, the reason why there is not a walk-in version of the Homesoap is because UVC light not only sanitizes surfaces but it can also destroy DNA and RNA (what humans are made of) so you don’t want to subject any part of your skin to UVC rays. Just that if it fails, it will be under warranty. On auto, these go on for 10 minutes, so if you assume 6,000 hours, that's enough for 36,000 sanitations. Most people will never get anywhere close to that. I have this unit and it works great, but I won't get anywhere near 36,000 uses. **Q: independent lab testing to confirm effectiveness?** A: So the manufacturer claims. I can tell you there is a slight odor after the device is removed, so clearly something is happening when it's in an activated box. Also just an amazing disinfected in general *by L***. on 8 April 2020* I somehow managed to get my hands on the Homesoap before it was completely sold out and back ordered on its website. Couldn’t be happier with this purchase. It is nice to have a UV sanitizer at the best of times, but during a pandemic doubly so. Any non-perishable groceries that can fit inside I put through it in cycles. If I have to go out for whatever reason, I disinfect my keys, phone, and anything else I may have used while out. All mail (not packages as most don’t fit) is disinfected in it as well. Pros: - SUPER Easy setup. Literally just plug in. - The light on the device lets you know when the items have gone through the 10 minute disinfecting cycle. - super light weight. Was immensely surprised at how light it was when I got it. - surrounds your items with UV light to disinfect all the nooks and crannies. - very roomy, I can fit a surprising amount of stuff in the device at one time. - Immediately turns off the UV light if the door is opened mid-cycle. Super important safety feature! Cons: - too easy to switch back and forth between automatic mode and manual - ozone smell when you open the door after cleaning cycle (sort of smells like melting plastic). Not much they can do about it, but it is still there. Just make sure to get your items out quick and close the door immediately. Don’t just leave it open, you really don’t want to be breathing in concentrated ozone (it slowly dissipates on its own so don’t worry, just don’t leave the door open). If you can get a hold of one of these, even if after the pandemic, it is well worth the money! There are so many things that should be disinfected that we use everyday but just don’t (like credit cards).
