Will this work with Grant Thompson's mini metal foundry?

Yes. I made a slightly larger build (6 gal bucket) and it holds up to the heat of this "big brother" version. Others have stated that this one will in fact fit the smaller 10 quart build. So I wont refute that. This is also effectively the smallest size of this line of crucible that will properly hold a 12 oz soda can fully in its mouth so that it will melt. One Down side to it is that large of a bucket ends up needing a LOT of fuel compared to a smaller likely more efficient build. I use this crucible and it can even withstand the heat of using anthracite instead of a charcoal fuel source which seems to compensate for the huge nearly 2 inch gap from outer crucible wall to inner foundry wall. This crucible stood up to the heat, even when the crucible itself was slightly glowing red. The downside this one has compared to the suggested depleted steel fire extinguisher crucible is the thickness of this one seemingly takes longer to transfer the heat to the media being melted. Again anthracite compensates, but it takes more time, more work and more fuel to get my build using this crucible going, but once it does, it runs like a diesel fueled freight train. You can practically melt a can as quickly as you can drop them in.One thing to be wary of, This crucible would be much nicer and safer if there were some sort of gripping ring/ledge near the top for tongs to lock into. So be very careful when pouring. You will spill, You will waste, and sometimes you will end up with half a crucible full of slag that splashes into your perfectly shaped biscuit. Its cone shape is NOT ideal for handling this much aluminum weight with accuracy.One thing to also note, So far it has been my experience that this takes roughly 20-30 cans to fill (to a safe level) which will yield around a quarter pound ignot muffin and the remainder will end up as slag. Ballpark estimate, One 13 gallon trash bag full of un crushed cans will yeild roughly 1 lb of pure aluminum and the remainder as slag. This is just my lay math, YMMV.

How big is this basin, compare it to something? Wanting to sand cast aluminum rods.

It will hold 3 lbs of molten aluminum (that's its rating) about the size of a large can of tomatoes according to my husband

`Can you get enough heat generated in a kettle grill with coals to melt aluminum cans with this?

I am using a home made foundry but I use your normal grill coals to melt cans with, I find it better then the hard wood coals actually.
