maybe not, totally now!
This awesome extender looked that it would dramatically improve the performance of wifi deficiencies in my house. This was to replace the ex6200 that finally died after many years of faithful and uneventful service. I've installed all the electronic thingys at my house so I thought that this would be a breeze. It seems that this unit will have to be returned as it cannot be made to function correctly as an extender. And, to get phone support of the device it has to be installed and registered. HAHA. I get it to install correctly but must be able to connect to it wirelessly. Upon trying to connect to it, even though it is still in the same room as the originating router, my device, a new Samsung phone, tells me that the password/passkey for the device (which I purposefully copied from the originating router) is incorrect. ughhh. I give up! If I should get this to work I'll repost a more positive review. Edited 4-10-17 Ok, sorry for that. I was able to get it to install and even update the firmware and connected to my original wifi network. It has soooo much better coverage/extending abilities. There is even a page on extender configuration to limit the power (100%, 75%, 50%) of the extender so as not to interfere with the originating wifi signal. My kids can now wander the house doing whatever they were doing on their wifi devices. I had mainly gotten this as I was having problems with the signal getting to my Roku downstairs thru concrete. Now there is never any buffering and I can/could wifi up to 4K video. You also have the option to change the wifi band (2.4 or 5GHz) on the Ethernet port out. It seems that to configure the extender, the install wizard app says to use any wifi able device to connect for installation, and that is not true as the compute power is beyond my new Samsung GS7 phone. My newer desktop was able to do everything in seconds. There was none of the authentication problems that I had encountered before. I feel a little foolish as I had spent so long trying to get it to install correctly but using only one way. I have no problems recommending this device to extend or even to be an Access Point (there's a switch). My only beef with the way Amazon sells Netgear anything is that they lump all the reviews together for all devices.

Works well, good price
We got this because our router is on the 2nd floor and when we watch streaming video in the downstairs living room, it would hang or pixilate. I'd previously gotten a WiFi extender from our Internet provider, and that didn't work well at all. This does. I like that the lights on it tell you everything you need to know at a glance--the extender is close enough to the router, the extender is close enough to the devices trying to use it, and you have good signal. Installation was fairly easy once I got their free "Nighthawk" app and used it to install. I had first tried to install by pressing the WPS button on my router, and that was unsuccessful. but I think that is due to my router, as it seems like the same reason the other extender I'd previously tried didn't work. I was even able to get this at a discounted price on amazon, which was even better. Once I had it set up to "talk" to my router, I just took it downstairs, plugged it in to an outlet near the TV, and we are good to go. I also like that the Nighthawk app gives me good info on what devices are connected to it, and how well it's working.

Great if you want to power cycle daily to stay connected
Total disappointment. Set up was ok. Took several tries for it to properly negotiate it's initial connection with my router, but once it was up and running, the range was excellent as was the speed. I was happy for 3 weeks. Then, any devices connected to it couldn't access the Internet. A quick unplug and plug back in fixed the issue after it rebooted. Then I was good for another 2 weeks, and had to power cycle again to get devices Internet access. Then it went for 1 week. Then every 2-3 days. I now have to unplug and plug it back in every single day when I get home from work for connected devices to have Internet access. Ridiculously annoying since (1) it has such a wide range that most of my devices prefer to connect to it, instead of directly to the router, only to have a useless connection to an expensive nightlight with no actual internet, (2) it is upstairs in a corner of my bedroom, so I have to go up and down the stairs to power cycle it (at least that would be good cardio if it weren't for the stress and irritability this junk device creates), and (3) I work an hour away from home and depend on remote access to my devices that lose their connection because of this extreme disappointment. I sprung the extra money in hopes of a fast and reliable device, and feel like I got hosed because it doesn't turn into a useless piece of junk until the return period is over. It's sad, because when it does work, it is absolutely wonderful, but power cycling on a daily basis is unacceptable. This is not my first bad experience with a netgear device, but it will be my last. I am done with their products. D-link, Asus, and linksys/cisco have all proven far more reliable. It was a stupid move going for netgear knowing that their products always had connectivity issues for me in the past, but I figured I would give them another shot after a decade of avoiding them. Now I avoid them for life. I recommend others do the same. I am an advanced pc builder and systems administrator with 20+ years experience, and have yet to find anything with the netgear name on it worth my time. Hope this helps at least one other person avoid this headache.

Works well except when it doesn't work at all.
I've only had this thing for 2 days, so lets keep that in mind. The good: - Took a crappy 1-2 bar connection and turned it into a reliable 5 bar connection (Although I have no idea how far that 5 bars stretches, I only needed it to fill a basement room that's partially in a wireless deadzone). - Did the same for the actual connection speeds. I've got about a 5x increase (on wireless connections) from what I had, which was like 5MBps or less. - Has an ethernet port, in case you have something that needs a wired connection. - Is small The Bad: - The design of the thing pretty much prevents standard wall mounting unless you put it front to the wall (which looks stupid and prevents you from seeing the status lights). This also means that if you need to put the extender in a place that doesn't happen to have an outlet, you're gonna need to grab an extension cord and basically let it sit on top of an object (or just on the floor if you'll accept that). - The connection goes out every 2 to 3 hours (I'm trying to get a more accurate measure of it) like clockwork, for a brief period of about 20 seconds. I'm unsure if this is because of where I have the extender (doubtful, the pattern is too steady), or if it's something that the extender does on its own for whatever reason. Either way, it's a nuisance, especially if you happen to be doing something like playing a PS4 game (As far as I can tell, every one of those games will kick you to the main menu if you lose connection while playing them.) So 4 stars because it only has 2 problems so far, but those problems need some effort to address and they absolutely /need/ to be addressed. I'd give it 3 and a half but amazon doesn't let you do that.

Great Product, but use the App
First, let me say I'm an old techie. Evidently, a bit too old. The idea of a mesh is a bit different from the early repeaters I had set up many moons ago. This device is much easier than those old units if you read the directions and do not try to read between the lines. I actually had it set up correctly in about 5 minutes but thought I had missed something since it was so easy. I must have wasted another twenty minutes because I had second-guessed the directions. I recommend using the Nighthawk phone app to set up the device. It is great at walking you through the steps and validating you have this device connected correctly. WPS also works, but it lacks feedback except for the lights on the device. As for how well it works. My router is in my garage. All my interior walls are insulated because we raised four sons in a small house. Needless to say, there is an impedance between the router and my computer at the other end of the house. Before the repeater, I was only getting 54 Mbits between the PC and the router. After the repeater, I am getting 585 Mbits between my PC and the router. So, it raised the speed by a factor of 10, plus a smidge more. Additionally, the signal is not noisy so that also improves the overall performance. I highly recommend this repeater, especially if you have a Netgear router. (I have a nighthawk router as well.)

Works well - But Needed more Setup
The Good: When set up correctly, it works well. The Bad: A quick set-up may cause problems in your network. My router was initially knocked off line a few times a week. The bottom line: A decent Range Extender if you take the time to tune it to your network. I had been running a Tendra router for wireless connectivity for a year + without any issues. I never needed to take action to restore the wireless. I recently moved into a much larger house, and the wireless signal could no longer reach from one end of the house to the other. Rather than wire up a new point to connect my router in a more central location, I chose to purchase the NETGEAR Nighthawk X4. I did a lot of research, and it seemed to be a solid piece of equipment - though I saw some entries noting that some people had trouble with the network being knocked offline I figured they were just incorrectly set up. I am very technically savvy. I've run large national network systems, data centers, and my current company produces networking equipment and networking components for other networking companies. The set up was a bit different than I expected. I think if you're setting up NETGEAR to NETGEAR it should probably be alright. I thought it was a bit more of a hassle than it should have been, but after setup, everything seemed to work OK. For about 3 days. Then my son came to me in frustration because the network was down. After some troubleshooting, I found that the access point was up, but the wireless router was non-responsive. This hadn't happened before adding the NETGEAR. After a bit more troubleshooting I ended up rebooting my router. Unfortunately the problem began recurring - every few days things would seize up - I just didn't have time to deal with it, until after I returned from vacation. This problem hadn't occurred before, despite serving a decent number of household devices in a mix of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. In the last house the original WIFI served: 3 media players, an apple TV, 2 Xbox's,1 Wii, 2 Raspberry Pis, 4 iPhones, 3 iPads, 2 Kindles, 3 computers, 3 Wifi to Zigbee gateways, 1 Wifii to bluetooth sensor system, and 2 servers wired to the Ethernet interfaces for internal access on the Wifi network. After about a month, i finally had a chance to sit down and do some investigation. The Access Point didn't seem to be failing, but it was causing the wireless to fail. Both worked in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz simultaneously. I ended up re-configuring the NETGEAR using the 'Do More' option and Enabling what they call 'FastLane', which allows me to split the signals, using one signal to talk to the router downstairs, and the other signal to offer wireless upstairs. Because I have some devices that can do 2.4 GHz and not 5 GHz, I use 2.4 GHz for extending WIFI, and the 5 GHz to talk with the router. Now this isn't a fix, but it works, and I frankly don't have more time to dive into what kind of packet errors are being generated that is knocking the primary wireless router offline. I paid a bit more for this wifi extender in hopes of having to spend less time managing it. Everything is stable now, at the sacrifice of offering 5GHz frequency upstairs. Note - that I can stream multiple devices at 5GHz downstairs without issues - only introducing the Nighthawk into the mix has caused noticeable issues.

Wow, the range on this IS amazing!
I swear I've tried them all - this is hands down the best! We have a 6,500 sq ft office area spread out over 4 floors in a concrete building that was really hard to keep a decent wifi signal through. We have a comcast/xfinity cable internet connection and have tried EVERYTHING for a decent signal! We tried the nighthawk x6 tri-band wifi router and an extender at first and it didn't work in half of the building. Then, tried to use just a router and multiple extenders (every single extender on the market.) We even tried both Google's pods and Xfinity's pods. Neither worked well. Xfinity's pods were a joke! Finally this one came out and I bought it as an upgrade to the other Netgear 1900. We were all in shock with the range that this one gives us! Not only is there not one dead zone in the entire building (again, 6,500 sq ft of concrete on 4 floors) but also we can get a decent signal literally a 1/4 of a mile down the road and pick up the neighbors wifi signals too (although they are locked.) I simply can't believe the difference in the technology! In addition, it literally took less than 2 minutes to set up. It has an easy pair button that you can use with your router that helps you pair the two in 3 seconds. Also, the new lights on the front interface of the unit indicate if you have the extender in the optimum location for the best connection or if you should move it. It also allows you to either extend the network (by using the same network name) or creating a completely NEW network by renaming the extended area as a new zone. Honestly, it is the best unit on the market! Can't go wrong with this one.

Amazing Extenders both AC2200 and AC1900
Okay, so I own a very large three bedroom Co-OP in NYC, it's a very old building which makes it very hard to get good WiFi signals, on top of that, I live near the train and then to make it worse there are three taxi station around me, so that's even more interference preventing the WiFi from being strong. I bought the Netgear X6 Router thinking it would fix my weak signal that I was getting from my Apple AC Router, and to my surprise there was no difference as far as being able to cover my entire co-op, the dead zones were still in the back bedrooms, I added a Netgear AC1900 Extender thinking it would help, and it did. But it still wasn't strong enough as it only gave me 50 percent strength, so I now bought the AC2200 Extender and placed it in the middle of my co-op to extend the X6 and then I connected the AC1900 to extend the AC2200 and now I'm in heaven, no dead zones at all... I have 100 percent strength throughout the entire co-op, yes it cost me more than what I was hoping to spend, but in the end its worth it as the kids can stream HD movies and be on their tablets and everything else kids do without issues. Both the bedrooms in the back have Apple TVs and I put HD movies to stream in both rooms at the same time and also connected two tablets and put netflix on both and streamed HD movies as well at the same time and not one issue at all, all were running smooth... I love it One last note, these are only dual band extenders, so they will NOT Extend all three bands if you have a triple band router, even if you use smart connect which connects both 5GHz bands, the extenders will only allow you to extend only one of the 5GHz bands no matter what and there isn't a way around it. So what I did was, used one of the 5GHz bands to be extended which is the high channels such as 157 and so on, and I used the lower band 5GHz bands to only stream HD devices that were near the router only and that worked wonders for me. Hopefully that helps Thank you
