Does it require batteries

Yes. They digitized it. Instead of a music box mechanism in the record needle it has four buttons. The lines on the discs change the order that the buttons are pressed and that tells the chip in the unit which song to play. You still have to wind it to make it spin the batteries are just to power the small electronics in it. IMHO This is inferior to the original.

Does this version have a music box type movement in the arm that the original had? Some say it is electronic and not the same.

Alas! It does not have the original music box sound. The new version makes annoying electronic music. I dug out my kids' old 1970's version and rehabed it for my grand kids and gave away the new one to toys for TOTs.
