New Tatting: Modern Lace Motifs and Projects

Perfect Beginner's book if you have a little knowledge
I'm a beginner tatter and this is an excellent book for beginners. All designs are doable for someone who knows how to make the knots correctly and picots. If you learned to read tatting patterns where the directions were spelled out such as: Ch 9.RW then R 2+2-2-2-2-2 (J to last p of prev R). RW Read the book's directions to find out what the symbols of the pattern are telling you to do. There are even step by step pictures that will tell you how to join the picots with an alphabet telling you which join. The instructor has spelled out the directions using the symbols of where to start and end, which directions the design is to be turned in, with the number of stitches between each picot for each motif that is to be repeated. By looking at the design graph the chains and rings are a given. The dark spaces between the picots means to join rings at a particular picot with an alphabet telling you which join. There could be better pictures on showing you how to join threads and how to bury threads under stitches instead of having you knot the end. What I like about this book are the directions, which allows people to understand any design regardless of the language differences between the tatter and the designer. You are also introduced to the split ring if you haven't made something using this technique. I also like that there is something that each person might want to make for themselves. You can show off your tatted jewelry, a head band or make a decorative accessory to wear or for your home. So for me this is a well thought out book of patterns for people of all ages and it allows the beginner to see the possibilities for future projects. Once finished with this book you still need to be modest and accept that you are a beginner tatter, but you can also feel as though you can hold your own at this level while looking forwards to learn new techniques.

Translated to English from Japanese - THANK GOODNESS!!!
I have wanted this book for quite a while - but it was only available in Japanese with diagrams. As much as I wanted to order it (Etsy & Handy Hands) I just couldn't bring myself to trust that I could decipher the instructions or follow the diagrams. I've tatted for about 15 years (intermittently - I'm a dedicated knitter who loves lace) but I was delighted to find that this lovely book was available in English. It has patterns that will fit perfectly in my home. Especially the Seaspray Table Runner that was featured on the cover of the Japanese Edition.About the book: Beautiful photography, done on lovely heavy paper (I hate those nasty tissue paper thin books!). In the front there are very clear, easy to follow photographs for beginners to follow - or those "coming back to the craft" needing a nice clear review. There are so many nice patterns, not overly fussy - rather updated for today's taste. Each time a new technique is added in a pattern, there are photos right there for you to refer to. No need to go hunting through the book looking for that new technique. In all, I agree with the reviewer who commented that if they could only have ONE tatting book - this would be it. I truly love this book. If I could give it ten stars I would certainly do it.

Great book for beginners and beyond!
Fantastic book for beginners and for advancing your skills! There are great photos and the patterns have fantastic visual diagrams! Best yet, there are projects you can do as you pick up each new skill the book teaches so you can produce fun crafts while learning. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn tatting! One thing to be aware of: while there are probably 20+ patterns in this book, I would say it's more of a skill-teaching book rather than just a book of patterns. That was exactly what I was looking for, so it's been great, but a truly expert tatter who is just looking for a book of patterns might want to look elsewhere.

Nice variety, wonderful pictures and diagrams
If you are just getting started with the craft of tatting, this is an AMAZING book. It has incredibly clear pictures of the basics (double stitch, rings, chains) as well as several very cute smallish things to make. Many of the small patterns can be joined to make larger mats or doilies. The author has put exactly how much thread is needed on a shuttle as well as diagrammed her patterns beautifully. The patterns at the end of the book are HUGE, but they are made of smaller motifs. This is also a fairly big book for a tatting book. If I were starting to tat today, I just might start right here.

The pictures are clear and it looks like all you want to know about tatting and how ...
this book has easier instructions then I received from the class I took. The pictures are clear and it looks like all you want to know about tatting and how to do it. No class needed. From all I read it was the best book for instructions, not a whole lot of patterns so if you are an accomplished tatter and that is what you are looking for this book only has a handful of patterns.

A happy recipient!
I purchased this book as a gift for a friend. She was immensely happy and delighted as she is a new Tatter and was itching to try more patters. Whether she has tried any I don't know for sure, but she mentions it each time we called each other.

Nice patterns with clear instructions
I've bought a few books on tatting patterns, and I find this one to be the most helpful. I would say I'm about intermediate or at least beyond the basics, and this has enough to keep the beginner and beyond interested. I've struggled to understand other tatting patterns but the written instructions with the tatting diagrams in this book are quite straightforward. I'm using it to tat with a needle even though it focuses on working with shuttles and enjoying the designs. I would certainly recommend this book.

Beau livre :)
