The sampler works as expected. After taking roughly 15 samples, and grinding on a couple rocks, the edge doesn't appear any more nicked up than when it was received. The samples were for turf, in high clay soil, and were only 4 inches deep so I can't attest to anything deeper. My biggest complaint is that It DOES NOT have any markings that would indicate depth as mentioned in the product description (Bullet point 3 says "..it is marked at 7.87 intervals to indicate sampling depth.."). This was a feature I wanted thus the 4 stars.

I purchased to pull soil samples from my yard without making holes with a shovel. I pulled soil from 16 areas and left no trace of damage to my turf. It's built well, sharpened on the end, which makes it easy to push into the ground. The large T-handle makes it even easier to push down and twist to obtain the best sample at your desired depth. Soil stays in the tube by design, so when you pull the probe from the soil, you do not lose your sample. It functions perfectly. Would I buy another...no, because this is built well enough to last my lifetime. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who needs one.

I like the fact that it's sturdy and stainless. Should last a lifetime. However. It was too hard for me to use in my soil. I would go six to eight inches deep but pull out only one inch of soil! I wish the side edges were beveled and polished so that it would be easier to remove compact soil off the side. I also wish the tip was sharpened to a knife edge. I sharpened mine. And also come with a protective cover for the sharp, business end for storage. Finally, I wish it came with a removal tool (a reamer) to help pound out compact soil, since I believe those who need to use this tool often have this type of soil. I have been using a thick rebar to pound out my compact soil. If a tool was made, it should be a very solid shaft that's smooth on the edges, with a hard plastic/ rubber stopper to prevent you and the tool from reaming to far. That would also protect the sharpened tip as you hammer this reaming tool to take out compacted soil.

Excellent product and did the job.

Solid, heavy construction. I would have no concerns about using a mallet to drive this into tough soils. The handle is comfortable, and is solidly attached to the shaft. The open slot makes sample removal easy, although you tend to get a 1/2 cylinder of soil sample, rather than a nice round cylinder. It is nice to not need a push stick to pop a sample out of the tool.

Works perfectly as intended, I was able to pull various plugs from various areas in my lawn in order to send out for testing.

Nice tool. However, be careful, edge on that tool are very sharps when you remove soil on it. Thanks to Mr Band-Aid!
