Is it around 1mm?** A: Yes I'd say 1mm + ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ FINALLY the right size coarse sand for potting mixes! *by J***B on April 28, 2021* This is the only sand I can find online that is the right size to add bulk and drainage to your potting mixes. This is smaller than pumice and larger then typically sand (probably .75-2mm, but total guess). The bag is quite small, but sand is heavy so not disappointed. Which the seller would offer larger sizes.But if you have been looking for true coarse sand that for indoor custom potting mixes, this is the size you need! You can stop looking now (unless you need a ton, haha).To clarify, adding typical beach sized sand or find sand does add heft to your soil but since it is so close in size to peat moss and coir bases, it doesn't improve aeration and drainage. You need this slightly larger coarse sand if that's what you are trying to achieve.Think about it like this. If you fill a jar with all same sized particles, like fine sand, and poor water in it. THen look how long, if at all, it takes for that water to "drain" through the sand and end up at the bottom. Now imagine putting small rocks in the same jar. They don't compact and thus the water would have plenty of air pockets and almost fall directly to the bottom. This is what larger coarse sand does; adds air pockets for oxygen exchange (aeration) and drainage (preventing root rot).Of course, outside the above hypothetical, the other ingredients (coir, peat, etc.) do retain moisture needed, so with potting mixes we are looking for a balance of retention and drainage.
