Impressive product
This product is very well-made, the components are solid and high-quality, right down to the screws, and it provides more than enough power to close our finicky solid oak door on a windy day. Reading through the instructions for installation was daunting, but all the info I needed was there. It is a little difficult to determine which of the three installation options is appropriate for your door. I carefully reviewed the diagrams on the top of page 1 and circled the one that applied to me and referred to the page with the appropriate installation instructions. I crossed out sections that didn’t apply so I wouldn’t get confused. The page 1 diagrams, instructions, and template refer to the “handedness” of the door which is not explained in the instructions. Google “door handing chart” to figure out what kind of door you have. I had a trouble with two different things during my install: 1. When marking drill holes using the template, I found that the “regular arm, jamb shoe” landed on a curved portion of trim above my door; it would not be attach to a flat surface as templated. But I noticed the elbow of the “main arm” had a bit of a vertical hinge, in addition to the pivot joint. I concluded it was probably OK to place the jamb shoe a little higher than the template showed. I ended up moving it about a quarter inch up and it seems to work just fine. I did not find discussion in the instructions of this as an optional adjustment. 2. At first I tightened the “forearm screw” with a screwdriver. The instructions however say to tighten this with a wrench, and I found it that is for a good reason. The washer on the forearm screw has a textured bottom surface which requires a lot of torque to kind of dig in to the forearm. My screwdriver did not provide nearly the torque required to keep the main arm and connecting rod from slipping apart. I reread the instructions and got a wrench and all was fine. The attached video demonstrates the factory settings, which seems like plenty power for closing the door. I may make adjustments according to the manual after a few days of living with it. That’s why I have not yet installed the cover. I’m really happy with the product. It seems refreshingly well-made, at no point did the screws seem like they would strip, and the metal is heavy and well cast., The close is made in the USA by a small company too! I finally have peace of mind that the door will be closed when I expect it to be!

Surprisingly good, worth the money
This Door Closer came well packaged. The instructions were clear and very detailed. They included a very useful, full size template on paper that I could actually tape up and use as a pattern. The installation wasn't simple (I did have to read the instructions completely because there are a few different ways it can be installed) but it was straight forward. All the necessary hardware was included and it was high quality. It feels very well built and has no problem at all closing my garage door which is heavy and old. If I needed another one I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of these. Unless it fails unexpectedly I would recommend it without reservations.

High end, but worth it
It took two hours for my brother and me to puzzle over the instructions before we could figure out which of the three ways of installing the door closer would be best in our situation -- and we both have advanced degrees in technical fields! The instructions leave out important basic information. For example, you need to know whether your door opens left-handed or right-handed, and the instructions give no clue how to tell. Once we figured out which of the three ways to use, the installation proceeded pretty smoothly. The end result was a lot more elegant than I'd first anticipated it would be. The door closer is at the high end in price, but all the parts are top-quality. Now that it's installed, I'm very happy with the installation, so I gave it a top rating.

good quality
At this price point, this door closer is the best on Amazon. It is feature rich: adjustable spring tension, adjustable close and latch speed, adjustable delay, adjustable back check. The build quality is high. It comes with multiple sets of screws for different door materials. Install instructions are clearly illustrated and easy to follow. I replaced a cheap door closer with this one. After some adjustments, now the door to my garage latches every time by itself. Hager is a family owned business with an interesting history. They make good stuff that is built to last.

Easy installation
I was apprehensive at first, it took a minute to decipher which setup option was the best for my shop door. Once I realized the template was showing exactly what to do, it was a cinch to install. Works great, I really like the way you can adjust the majority of the closure, then fine tune the last inch or so to insure the latch engagement.

Impossible to adjust
Purchased this item because they all look the same and this one was least expensive. Well, get what you pay for. Have had 3 very handy men work on this, read all directions, viewed some instructional videos, and it still does not offer to work properly. Unfortunately, the return window has closed, so in the trash it goes. Very disappointed. *Update* I will amend my review from 1 star to 3 stars. Still not a superior product, but did FINALLY get it satisfactorily adjusted. Far too difficult for an experienced handyman. Many calories were burned over this item.
