For years now, I've avoided cotton shorts and only wear synthetics. I also carry lots of gear (a couple of guns, some knives, lights, and a plethora of practical EDC stuff. These shorts, paired with a good gun belt (I use a Wilderness Original Instructor Belt with the polymer lining), are fantastic for civilians who carry stuff. The pocket space is more than adequate, the pockets (with modifications) can hold your stuff securely, and I pocket-carry a pretty heavy Glock in the front right side. There are velcro belt-keepers over the loops, and the pockets and mini inner pockets are useful.Sizing: The elastic waistband makes the shorts very versatile for waist size. FYI, I was wearing a 40 and a 42 (two pairs) for years, when I was very fat (maybe up to a waist of 47/48?). Since I've been losing weight this year, I kept using the 40's for as long as I could, then changed to a size 34, figuring that it would stick with me from now that my waist size is about an actual 41, down to when I'm 36 or so. That means lots of variance--you can order a size much smaller than you are, and it'll be good with a belt for quite a range. The 34 works well for me now, and probably should be good to go for as much weight as I'm planning to lose.I'm on my third pair, and I typically sew together the gusset (?) at the rear-top of the cargo pockets, kind of emulating what happens when you wear BDU's and always have the rear button connected on the same pockets. Without it sewn together, you might have stuff fall out when you're sitting/driving. I also add a little square of cotton onto the outside of my left pocket so that the tooth-like clip of my knife will bite in there and stay put. The nylon surface is too slick, and the knife sheath (secured by the clip) will just slip right off otherwise.Great shorts. I'm a short, heavy, middle aged man. I took a chance on the these, and really love them. 42 inch waist ordered, they fit like tailor made. BELT LOOPS are a good thing, both in keeping things where they need to be, and letting me keep certain things on my waist where I'm used to having them. The pockets are plenty, and they work- zippers in the back, velcro on the cargo pockets, and the slash pockets are deep enough for a few things. They also look good, basic black, no neon or bright colors to stand out.One thing you need to be aware of, they are not 'full' bike shorts, with a padded liner most bike shorts have. So you'll need to use your own. Good things is, these could be worn at work or other activities with normal underwear, and used for a short ride as such. For longer rides, use the padded liners, and ride all day.I will be ordering another pair soon. Yes, a bit expensive, but I've paid more for less elsewhere.
