I'm going to use this on my single-man pontoon boat. Would hard-mounting the transducer provide better images than floating it free in the water?

Probably. I simply allowed the transducer to 'troll' with me while drooping off the side of the boat. Worked very well. My use was only for remote Canada lake fishing and it is very portable and worked fantastic.
