The piece that floats in the bowl is filled with water. It that normal? I’m afraid it may mold inside.

The floater comes apart much easier if you go from the inside circles and pry from there. It’s really not that hard. I clean it once a week, along with the rest of the pieces(which you should do with whatever water dispenser you use) I’ve never seen mold or anything else weird growing or hanging out in there.

Will this keep his chIn and chest dry?

Not really. I have a shih tzu and I cut his beard short, but his chin still gets wet. I haven't found anything that will keep it dry but i would hate to cut his beard off completely.

There isn't any water sitting at all on the lid part, does he have to figure out how to stick his tongue in the paw hole? Trying to stop water gulping

When you fill the dish a small amount of water sits on top, as they drink the weighted float goes down. The pressure of there mouth holds the weight down while drinking so that the water is available. My two figured out very quickly. I have terrier with beards and I always had a sloppy meson the floors after they would drink. This has solved the problem. My daughter has the same bowl and is very pleased with it for her 2 dogs too. It does slow them down from gulping water, they must lap it up!
