Some of the older fisher price tracks connect little different I believe they have a connector track to connect the different type of track master sets . **Q: Can this be used on its own without any train sets?** A: Yes and no. My kids use it all the time without being hooked up. The base has tracks attached to it, ideally it would be used when connected to tracks. **Q: Can I purchase the accessories separately (box train and similar)?** A: Hi, I know the set is so cute but I don't think you can purchase separately. Push the red top of the windmill with track gate open, the windmill spins until it completely unwinds. With the gate " across the track" 'closed , push the red top and the windmill's action is set , it won't spin until the gate is open, like when you push a vehicle on the track through the gate then it spins until it unwinds. I bought this for kids. Not to give , to have a good toy for them to play with. The old guy said it was a nice toy.
