Q: Are the straight side bars that go into top/bottom T's made up of more than one piece so that one or more could be removed for shorter height?

Yes, 3 black sections connect bottom t with casters to top chrome t, so one or two can be removed on each side to make it shorter. It is pretty short to begin with. I thought it would be taller.

Q: I want to slide it between 2 walls. My question is from wheel to wheel is it over 15"?

If you are looking at the width as it is in the picture, it is almost 31" width.. if you turn it to the side (1 black pole facing you) it is 15"

Q: How convenient will this item be to use at dance competitions? Is it portable, easy to disassemble and carry in a suitcase?

I think it would work for you. It’s easy to assemble/disassemble. I guess it would depend on what size luggage you want to use.

Somewhat easy, but not as easy as the "folding" ones. Issue is that it isn't too sturdy and wasn't perfectly straight because of the way the vertical rods are secured to the rolling base.
