I believe these APUs work the same way as it uses your on board physical memory being your ram to render your graphics. As reviews and info videos state clearly "these chips are out performed by a GPU such as a 1050ti" you've got to keep into account that while most CPUs don't get benefit from anything above 2400mhz ram the Ryzen series is superior in the sense that it has a sweet spot at around 3200mhz. With that being said, the APU chips out perform any other integrated graphics system that doesn't use a dedicated GPU as the Ryzen series CPUs read/ do benefit from higher speed ram. Also of note, a GPU is a dedicated graphics card which currently use DDR5; being the fastest utilized memory. **Q: What motherboards support this without a bios update?** A: I am using a windows only motherboard: ASRock model: B450M Pro4 with UEFI Bios American Megatrends v: P1.10 date: 06/19/2018. It worked out of the box, with the latest stable AntiX Linux. I did not know a manufacture would require MS Windows to update a Bios in 2019, crazy but would not suggest this motherboard to anyone that wants to run Linux, Arch or any of the active operating systems rather than windows. Dual booting systems with windows should be OK. **Q: if i use this in a custom bult pc with a nvidia gtx 1060 and 16gb of ram paird with it will it play all modern day games optimally** A: Ignore the guy above me. Yes any of the 1060 cards can play ALL modern games (not vr tho). Yes, ALL triple A games will run at worst on medium. Shoot, my 1050pny runs every AAA game i own. Performance will vary but you play with settings till you are optimal. Anyone who tells you no is either some elitist, or they are just nuts....or they are trying to sell something. **Q: i heard that higher end motherboards like the x370 have updated bios and can be used immedietly with one of these chips? is that true?** A: It's yes and no. All Raven Ridge ready motherboards have a sticker on them indicating their bios is updated. That said, there are x370 motherboards that are Raven Ridge ready BUT they are the new stock. The older stock of x370 are NOT Raven Ridge ready. And this little APU from AMD is inanimate silicon proof. Yes, it's ONLY 4-core, 4-thread. But for the price, it's unmatched. You can actually game on this chip and it's integrated Vega 8 gpu. No, not ultra quality at 4k, but decent enough at 1080p and medium quality. Won't rock the nation, but it WILL be playable. The best part is AMD doesn't jack up the prices just to let you OC your own chip. Installation is super-simple in an AM4 motherboard. Lift the lever, line up the arrow, drop it in, lower the lever. The stock Wraith Stealth cooler has thermal paste pre-applied, and it's a breeze to install. Just pay attention to the little AMD logo overhang when you orient the fan - so it doesn't set over your DIMM slots. It would have covered one of mine if I wasn't paying attention. Unlike stock Intel coolers, these are actually decent!! So while you could still spend extra on a better cooler, you can also save your budget and keep the stock one on there. It's fine unless you're going to do some heavy overclocking. Running PassMark 9, temps maxed at 62 degrees, and my setup scored 4045, or 79th percentile. Unigine Heaven 4 gave me FPS: 29.3, Score: 737 - 1080p high quality. On Cinebench R15, I had 75.21fps and a cpu score of 578. It's really a decent little chip for such a great price. If you're debating between this and the R5 2400G, you REALLY have to ask yourself if the difference is worth the price. The uses where the 2400G is a better deal are pretty slim. It really only has the 8 thread advantage. So if you do a lot that takes advantage of the threads, or a couple of games where it gets a little boost from the 3 extra Vega cores ... yeah, it may be worth it. But not for the price difference, in my opinion. The 2200G is the king of budget CPUs right now ... and unlike some Intel chips, the word "budget" doesn't mean you're making sacrifices. It's as close to no compromise as you can get with integrated graphics - which runs circles against Intel iGPUs. Not against the chip, but a comment at Amazon, but the packager wasn't exactly careful when pulling the part off the shelf for packing. They stuck their hand UNDER the top flap of the box, and almost ripped the whole side out above the CPU. You can see the tear lines in the photo. I was NOT impressed, but there was no damage to the chip itself, so wasn't worth the time/hassle to return and replace.
