It looks like Gerber cloth diapers are recommended for burp cloths but which type? Birdseye vs heavyweight gauze & prefold vs flatfold?

I just bought the 3ply prefold and they are so thin. I usually sew on them to make them pretty but I don't like the new weight, so I caved and purchased the heavyweight gauze prefold, and they are very nice for burp cloths. that is what I would recommend. they are sold in a 5 pack for about 12.50 (at walmart if you can find them) here are the heavy weigh gauze I ended up buying instead. http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Count-Heavyweight-Gauze-Prefold/dp/B007VBYVXI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1402663499&sr=8-3&keywords=gerber+cloth+diaper just about the same price as walmart

Are these the same thickness throughout? Or thicker in the middle

They are very thin throughout, but are slightly (very slightly) thicker in the middle. However, this is not enough to absorb much of anything. They also shrink significantly when washed/dried. I had to send them back.

how well will these work as inserts?

My daughter uses them in her Alva baby cloth pockets as inserts! AMAZING!!! She does not leak through these like she does her inserts!

I use for general cleaning. Do you recommend for this?

My mom still had some from the 80s that she used to polish her wood furniture and for dust rags. Worked great. They are good for diapers, burp rags, and for cleaning when they no longer use them for diapers.
