What is the distance between the upper and lower rubber bumpers?

Thank you for your question. It is 22" from the center of the top bumper to the center of the bottom bumper. The spacing between the two bumpers is 21 inches.

Could you tell me the dimensions of the openings in the mesh part of the gate? I have a ferret and don't want him to get through the mesh part

The openings are 1 1/2 in wide and 2 in tall.

I cannot lift up the locking bar of my new gate out of its locked position to adjust its width, despite trying even with tools. Suggestions?

Both of my gates were like that. I initially used a screwdriver to release the locking bar from its “down” position. Then I pried the metal clip piece apart very slightly and it works fine. It’s a well made gate and this is just a slight quality check issue that can be easily solved.

Is screwing needed? How does it stwy from wall to wall

There is no screwing. There are rubber pads - two on each side - that sort of brace themselves against the sides. To make this wide enough and 'tightened', there is a stick in the middle with grooves in it that you guestimate what width you need, line up with a metal phlange on the other stick, and then push down on. So it self-braces against two walls
