Q: How does it hold up on direct fire?

Really now, don't use over direct fire. Let fire turn to coals and kit holds up well and allows you to stir, flip or whaterver you need to do without burning your fingers.

I treat my camping mess pots as if they were cast iron. Wash with water only, when dry heat pan again and coat with a thin layer of butter, bacon fat, or coconut oil. Polish away any excess. If kit has been stored for any length of time, reseason at home . Wash, dry, heat, oil, wipe dry. Lots of videos on how to season a pan

Q: Can you deep fry (cook with hot oil) in the pan?

Under no circumstances would I try deep frying. These pans are meant for one camper to warm a can of beans, fry bacon and eggs. Single serving size.

Q: does it make food taste bad?will it fit in toaster oven?

No it does not make the food taste bad. Depends on the size of the toaster oven. It is best used outdoors at a camp fire, just cover the bottom of the pan you are going to use with bar soap. Really easy to clean it you do this.
