Do the gears come off easily? Doesn't that make operating them difficult for little ones?

Yes, they come off easily, and no does not make it difficult. It is really cute, and they can spin all the gears around. Not a toy you can carry around, cause gears will fall off, but it is great fun. My grandaugher loves it. Great for learning colors too.

It says 18 months but I think 12 months. I got it for my granddaughter at a younger age, she likes to see it turn but is most interested in taking the gears off and then chewing on them.

Does this contain formaldehyde?

It certainly does not. Melissa and Doug toys are safe and very high quality.

what are measurements?

The gears have a 2.5” diameter, the board is about 3.25” across. It’s a nice size, but not too big for little kids to handle.
