I’d say quite a bit. Bet you could but 4 laptops on it and it wouldn’t budge. It takes some effort to adjust it, so it’s definitely sturdy! I absolutely love this stand!!

What is the weight limit of the stand? my son has a 17" gaming laptop so it doesn't compare to a lightweight apple or pc.

It's a very heavy duty laptop stand it can even hold a good few laptops, this laptop stand will easily hold a 17 inch laptop.

Is it easy to put laptop on/off it? I like to take my laptop off to watch tv in bed, but during the day I'd like to use it on the stand for school.

Very easy! Resting the laptop on the lip of the stand is holds well. You do not attach your laptop; you just rest it. I take my laptop on and off so I can alternate sitting and standing while teaching virtually or when I use my computer for any reason; I like to alternate standing and sitting. I also sometimes keep my laptop on the stand and use in the sitting position by just lowering the stand.

How padded is the bottom of this product? Would it scratch a wood surface?

The stand has rubber under its base. I move it around on a wood conference room table and desk: no scratching at all. Highly recommended.
