Clock speed? Chipset?

The chipset is in the description, it is the FTDI FT232rl, it is internally clocked so there is no easy way to know what it is set to. If it helps I have personally run this unit at 115Kbps

The ESP8266 Wi-Fi chip uses 3.3 vdc. With switch set to 3.3 volts on the programmer can you directlyTx and Rx to the ESP chip without level shift?

Yes. I've been programming numerous ESP8266 versions with this. No level shifting required

Can it be powered via vcc and via usb at the same time?

While I have never done it, I only use it to program pro minis, it should be fine as long as it is under 500 mah, matches the 3.3/5v and shares the ground. I still think it would be best to program it only under USB power if possible though. At worst the fuse is tripped but that's what it is there for. If you ordered from me and do this, let me know your results. If it damages your board, please get in touch to get a no cost replacement.

Gave up. can anyone get this to work? even tried with term emulator and known=-good mcu.

I found these only sort ot work with usb3.0. You can read, but not write. Don't forget some coms require rx and tx to flip. Rx of ftdi to tx of device... like with uart.

this worked well for my to flash a custom firmware on my SONOFF zigbee-router to enable it to connect to Home Assistant without using WiFi.

Used this for gm obd 1.5 computer and it worked well. It connected to the car, programmed tunes and was a good price. If you are doing car stuff be sure to have a solid connection between the computer to device to car and set everything on a solid platform if you program. I wiggled my laptop on my lap while programming and bricked a ECU with tunercats. But I trust this device to tune with and will be installing it hard wired to my connections to my obd 1.5 gm ecu's.
