Fight The Fear: Overcoming Obstacles That Stand In Your Way (The Happiness Series)

Compelling Book. Quick read. Loved it.
I never thought I would be laughing so loudly at someone’s self-narrative of having a heart attack, but Gurian’s description had elicited such riotous laughter from me that when my husband asked me (yes I bought the book using my husband’s Amazon account) why I was laughing, I replied, “Oh I’m just reading about Jeffrey Gurian’s heart attack.” Gurian was a wise-cracking kid in school who experienced a hellish nightmare scenario while attending Dental School. Although the chapter on Dental School evokes both sympathy and admiration that he stuck with it, as a former teacher, I confess I felt a small but certain satisfaction to discover that sometimes disruptive students do grow up to ‘get it back’. Gurian’s book is generously laced with spirituality, a can-do attitude, and a love for life even though he was near suicide during his bout with Covid. Then his hilarious description of the ER Room doors locked and they couldn't wheel him in also was hilarious. It was startling to discover just how sick he had been when hydroxycholoroquine was administered to him which he credits with saving his life. This was in March when they didn't want to use the medicine widely because it's cheap and the President touted it. Thank God, Gurian took the required dosage or I wouldn’t be sitting here reading his witty, compelling, very unusual story. His candid and humorous take on the story of his life makes it seem like he’s very much just a traveler, looking at life objectively, embedded with the brilliant teachings of Deepok Chopra, Wayne Dyer, and others, and it’s fascinating to see how these great thinkers influenced Gurian’s life and helped him overcome so many obstacles. Well-written and very quick read. Loved it!

You will not be able to put this book down!
This book is such a gift!!! It's not every day one stumbles across a story that leaves one changed for the better and Fight The Fear does exactly that! In this entertaining, enlightening and deeply moving memoir, the reader is swept away on an epic journey with an unlikely hero, the young wannabe dentist and aspiring comedian, Jeffrey Gurian. Gurian appears to have the cards stacked against him at every turn. No matter what seemingly insurmountable challenge he faces, one can still be quite certain that his greatest obstacle of all is always...himself! Despite his never-ending catalogue of fears, Gurian dances with them, time and time again, ultimately spinning them away in the opposite direction in order to follow his bliss and stay true to his dreams. The reader is taken down a cascade of unbelievably outrageous adventures, each one more amazing than the last! I had to fight the urge to contact my dentist, after having to repeatedly peel my jaw off the floor! It's a perfect balance of humor and heart. The author's willingness to be vulnerable and share some of his most painful experiences so candidly, offers the reader a master class in the art of perseverance. Gurian's lessons highlight the power that positivity, imagination, creativity and faith have in conquering the impossible! It's a book that completely shatters one's perspective on fear. Like all wonderful books, one doesn't want it to end. The good news for the reader is that Jeffrey Gurian passes the torch on to them! I put the book down, along with my fears thinking, "If Jeffrey could do all that, I wonder what I could do?!"

Brilliant book on how to change your perspectives and win in life
I've read Dr. Gurian's previous work "Healing your Heart, by Changing your mind" and was looking forward to his next book and it left me in awe!"I call that man awake who, with conscious knowledge and understanding, can perceive the deep unreasoning powers in his soul, his whole innermost strength, desire and weakness, and knows how to reckon with himself,"- once said Hesse. The first step you make into changing your life is when you learn to objectively analyze your triggers and patterns you engage in. And this is what "Fight the Fear" is about. This is a very intimate book, it takes an act of great courage to face your pain and demons and moreover, share these very personal, full of doubts moments with an audience. Dr. Gurrian leads you through his life showing how certain events affected him and how he overcame obstacles that were holding him back and "reprogramed" his mind. The greatest point of this book is showing that it is ok to be scared, have anxiety, emotions and feelings -as Dr. Gurian mentioned: "Courage is not the absence of fear it is acting in spite of it."I read the book and it made me take immediate action to shift my mindset and re-evaluate my life.I love the book and highly recommend it to anyone who is battling with their fears to get a copy as soon as possible.

A Fun, Fast, Pick-Me-Up During Challenging Days
As a HUGE comedy fan with continuous interest in personal growth, I have been aware of Jeffrey Gurian from Sirius XM Radio shows , Comedy Matters and from his books. I was aware he caught the virus and was so excited to learn that he not only recovered, but also that he wrote about his experience while weaving it into his life experiences of fear, fear-facing, and growth. I love the self-deprecating humor that let's us all see/remember that none of us is perfect, but by laughing at ourselves (not beating up) and maintaining constancy of purpose, we CAN do anything. I also especially love all the comic and comedy references! A fear that I overcame that kind of ties in was meeting the amazing Ron Bennington at Moontower Comedy Festival. The first year he came, I just could NOT being myself to meet him. I was nearly catatonic and so angry with myself when it was over. The next year he came, on the first night, I just did it. I had semi-practiced what to say and had a super fun chat talking with him about Fez and Jeffrey. This book came at a good time to help me reset from my recent pity party about a worsening health condition that needs surgery. It was such a fun read and also got me out of virus land.

Rubbish
This book is just a biography of a little self important man, nothing to do with fighting a fear, just his silly stories.

Fight the Fear a readable, vital book on conquering your fears.
When I think of fear, FDR’s famous 1933 remark “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” automatically comes to mind.We all have fear in our lives, and some people have fear rule their lives. Jeffrey Gurian, best known for his popular “Comedy Matters” columns and videos, has had his share of fears in his life, but he has never allowed it to rule him.And his long road to facing his fears is chronicled in his excellent book Fight the Fear. What I enjoyed about Gurian’s book is that he doesn’t drown the reader in a sea of medical and psychological terminology and theories about the subject. Instead, he uses episodes in his life dealing with how he accomplished that goal, whether it be his difficult four years in dentistry school, the hazards of solo travelling across Europe, and even conquering the fear of speaking in front of a live audience when he took up performing stand-up comedy. And the best part is these collection of personal stories will ring true with readers, as they will quickly identify themselves enduring similar incidents, which reassures them that they are not alone when it comes to dealing with their own personal experiences with fear.Fight the Fear is an engrossing, indispensable book on how to face down and conquer fear, so it doesn’t have to take control of your life. Definitely a must-read.
