The second unit is set up in the Loft/Office with the main PC and NAS box cabled into the ethernet ports, the works laptop use the wireless connection. I used to have a very weak signal in the bedrooms before, but now they have a very good signal. Once you have syncronised the second unit to the main unit everything is automatic. Hope that helps. **Q: can additional extenders be added? So one base unit wired to the router, and have several extenders throughout the house?** A: Where do you purchase an additional homeplug? I need one more but don't really want the kit as I have the base unit already. **Q: Can you connect other version's of a tp link powerline adapter to these?** A: You can, but with caveats. I had a pair of existing 2,000mbps 2 port plugs set up (TL-PA9020PKIT). One next to my router, the other in my office. They work great, and I had full 2,000mbps speeds. I bought this kit to extend wifi up to the loft and out to the garden, not really fully realising there was a non-wifi master, and a secondary wifi slave. So there is only one Wifi extender in this pack (TL-WPA7510KIT) It took me a few attempts, but I have now managed to get all 4 sharing my single network across 4 rooms. The trick seemed to be pairing them in a string sequence, not all to the first one in the router. So I had the first non wifi one plugged into the router, paired with my other non-wifi one. Then I paired that second one with the new master of the wifi kit (which is just a single port 1,000mbps , no wifi). Then I paired THAT one with the wifi extender one. Finally, I cloned my wifi settings on that last one. The downside is that my 2,000 network is now running at 1,000 because it all has to go at the speed of the slowest part in the network. And the wifi is only extended towards the garden, not towards the loft, because only one half of the TL-WPA7510KIT is actually broadcasting wifi. Otherwise it's pretty plug n play. I seem to have to re-pair them after they've lost power. They will work across different circuits with varying levels of success, from fairly good to ok for controlling lights . You need to try it and the connection does improve with time but can vary throughout the day depending on what electrical loads you have. I have had both TL- WPA8631P and TL-WPA7617 kits all working together but now only use the single Ethernet plug (to my WiFi router) and the two WiFi plugs (one with a mains socket and 3 Ethernet connections, one with just one ). The plug on the same mains circuit regularly gets over 180Mbs and connects our 4k tv plus tablets and phone back to the router (plume based). The other gets between 35 and 75Mbs and creates a bridge to the WiFi in my shed allowing me to stream audio or YouTube videos without issue as well as other ‘hard to reach’ network devices. The tpPLC app is useful for showing status and basic setting but changing any network settings will take you to a web interface which can be fiddly. The only reason you might want to do that is to block a device from connecting if the signal is strong but the connection not good enough, or to alter the WiFi power. Do not alter anything else otherwise it may not work properly. The WiFi plugs can appear on your Tether app if you use it but can be hit and miss.
