A comprehensive showcase. Excellent book. Must have
As an European graphic designer now working in the Gulf region, I found myself profoundly ashamed of how little did I know about arabic and persian contemporary graphic design before moving here! This book is an excellent and comprehensive showcase of the works of the most prominent and emerging graphic designers and visual artists from the arab world. It is an absolute must-have for anyone interested in topic such as modern arabic type design. It is well designed with accurate information and plenty of beautiful illustrations and photos. The book would deserve five stars if it weren't for the custom made typeface used through the book: a western typeface that mimics arabic calligraphic style. Maybe it is not entirely rational, but I just hate all these 'alì baba fonts'; of course I am all in favour of contamination and cross-cultural design; I just feel that designing a western typeface so that a lower case 'a' resemble a 'ta marbuta', the 'q' resembles a 'waa' and so on, it is not the way to achieve something new and interesting, no matter how beautifully crafted such a typeface might be.

Perfect
Met my expectations perfectly. For me as a graphic designer this is more than just beautiful pictures, this is about how arabic culture is used in different ways as illustrative type, and how arab comunicates itself. I use it not only for inspiration, but for understanding how arab is composed. Great book for you if you're working with arabic type, as inspiration and referents. And it is so beautiful, that you'll probably be having it somewhere everybody that visits you could see it.
