Almost book to add to your collection. Read to your children's and sample the music
This book is the best. He capture every highlighted musical artist back in the funk days. I'm glad for taking his class this year. I heard some much about this instructor from friends. If your in the Northern California look him up and take his class. Class is fun learning about how funk was created and where it's leading to in the Hip-Hop era.

Fantastic Look at the Social and Cultural Impact of Funk Music
Whether you grew up in 60's and 70's or not, this is a fascinating review of the music that shaped our culture and reflected the societal upheavals occurring at that time. Rickey Vincent's work is excellent. Even having lived through those times, I never drew some of the parallels outlined in this book. Definitely worth the read!

needs updating?
Good book, no mentions of ska and reggae music, which undoubtedly would have contributed to funk sound and vibe along with the mentioned soul and jazz. Refers a lot to 80s rap music (which a lot hasn't aged well and sounds dated... )so book written in 90's and leaves the question, where is the funk nowadays?

cracking read
I bought this for my wife for Christmas. Even though she's a massive funk fan this has broadened her already considerable knowledge a lot. A must for all funksters out there.

The absolute history of FUNK music!
This book makes one of the most factual "records" of the history of Funk music i have ever read. R.Vincent has managed to pull of one of the greatest tasks in the field of music journalism, that is to present the history of one of the most exciting and extremely influential music styles, such as Funk. A musical kind that is rarely present in any kind of music book those days. The reader has the chance to read and learn how it all started; from the early years of soul, to the following birth of the Funk from the one and only James Brown, to the psychedelic years of Sly and Family Stone , to the ParliamentFunkadelic Thang, and so on...Rich biographies from the illuminaries of the Funk and a great presentation of essential funk/soul/black rock records as well!Essential to any lover of the "rhythm of the One"!

Standard Reference BUT flawed.
A thorough reference of the music. My only grippe is that it seems to ignore Motown and Phillidelphia in favour of the big names of funk and the more obscure. For example Norman Whitfield hardly gets a mention. The list of samples is fascinating.
