I couldn't put this book down
This book came into my possession by chance and I honestly didn't think I'd read it, but I picked it up to read the first couple of pages and that was 2 hours ago! I don't consider myself someone who is interested in the "true crime" so I didn't think this book would appeal to me, but Michelle Lyons does an incredible job of telling you about her experience with the death penalty in Texas while maintaining an even-keel. She presents her experience, both where she excelled and made errors, and tells you about the people she met on death row. The thing I most appreciate about this book is that Michelle Lyons relates her experiences back to her own personhood. She talks about how she thought things didn't affect her early in her career and how that changed as she got older and had children. She also includes segments from another media person in the death row system whose insights provide a nice parallel and counterpoint to Michelle Lyons'. A worthwhile read that isn't as gruesome as it is thoughtful and engaging about an important and difficult civic topic.

Surpringly dull
The subject matter is clearly an emotive one, as it should be.I read the book in one sitting. I found it to be devoid of emotion and lacking in anything approaching insight. In fact, it's style reminded of a number of sports book I have read - "On Thursday we played at Bolton, it was very cold but we had to make sure we we didn't get any injuries because we we're playing again on Saturday " that sort of thing.A missed opportunity.

Maybe I was so enthralled with her book because I wish I could have been more like her.
Whether you believe in the death penalty or not, you need to read this book. I can not imagine witnessing so many executions. The author, Michelle Lyons, does an excellent job in describing what she is seeing, feeling and experiencing. I found myself enthralled with each story. Each execution was different, yet the same. A crime was committed, a guilty, verdict, and death. As the book progresses, so do the feeling that Michelle has about her experiences in her profession. Michelle Lyons to me seems to be a strong woman who is very adventurous, free spirited, and has a zeal for life. I myself do not know many women that could have done everything she has done so far in her life. Maybe I was so enthralled with her book because I wish I could have been more like her.
