Sam-e is used in Europe, by prescription, to treat mood disorders, but it's also known for helping with osteoarthritis and joint pain. I started taking it regularly again while doing marathon training. I figured it might help my knees, and if it didn't, it would take the edge off of that lovely mood that sidelined athletes can be in. This made such a difference to my training. I have tried to tell others who complain of knee injuries, but not everyone realizes...this isn't just like another plug for glucosamine or another supplement marketed after the Medicare-supplied walkers commercial. I also noticed I was more anxious when I went without this for a little under a week (had already been anxious and working on it, not as a withdrawal symptom). It's also purported to help liver function and protect DNA. I am not a cell biology expert, but the variety of functions proposed are certainly not implausible from what I do know, as it is a methyl donor.

I tried a different brand of SAM-E about a year ago. Began having stomach cramps soon after. Tried Doctors Best and found I no longer had stomach issues. I suffer from joint pain in the legs and mild depression. Noticed a major relief in joint pain and a better state of mind with a reduction in my depression. I buy a 60-count box once a month. 2 tabs a day. While I would like to double the daily intake, forty dollars a month is the most I can afford. My honest opinion, it relieves joint pain, and puts me in a better state of mind, without getting into SSRI's or opiates. The only minus is the price.

Sam-e is only thing I found that helps my depression.

I bought this product after hearing that Dr. Oz recommended Sam-e for depression. Dr. Weil also recommends it but says you should look for the butanedisulfonate form. I tried emailing Doctor's Best to ask them about this, but the email was returned as undeliverable. However, I am no longer depressed so it seems to be working. I have suffered several major concussions which has been linked to major depression. I can get so depressed that I stop showering. I have been on and off SSRI antidepressants for years. They always stop working. I heard Dr Weil on NPR talking about his new book Spontaneous Happiness, and he said that the SSRIs have been linked to cancer and heart problems. The Mayo Clinic's website also says they can cause osteoporosis. Zoloft made me feel like I wanted to jump out of my skin. I take one Sam-e pill(400mg) a day on an empty stomach. This is very important if you want it to work. When I took 2 pills, it made me a little manic which was kind of fun, but I only really need 1 pill. The great thing about Sam-e is that if it is going to work for you, it will work within a week. My naturopath said that it doesn't work for everyone. Dr. Weil also recommended St. John's Wort, Rhodiola, and Ashwagandha for depression. Another important vitamin is vitamin D3. Most Americans are deficient in the sunshine vitamin. Dr. Weil recommends 2000i.u. a day. I've read that over 50% of all cancers could be prevented if people had adequate levels of vitamin D. Everyone should be tested for their levels. Optimal is between 50-70. Go to [...] to get more info of vitamin D. It also prevents depression. The best way to get it of course is from sun exposure, but for those who can't get sun, supplements are good. Dr. Mercola says that since sunscreens have gone into use, skin cancer has greatly increased. He thinks this is due to lack of vitamin D and the cancer causing ingredients in most sunscreens like any of the parabens.

This is the best SAM-e on the market. It’s effective at lifting mood, without any bad side effects. It doesn’t cause stomach upset, like some other brands.
