Q: why does it say size is 8 1/2 x 11?

I don’t know about the 8 1/2 by 11 but I do know it is 50 weight which is just right for most machines and made of extra long cotton fibers then covered with some kind of cotton coating which makes it glide. A great thread

It probably is 50 weight, although none of Gutermann's spools are marked with the weight, as far as I can see. (I have many spools of different sizes and colors, and none of them are marked.)
