SPOILER FREE REVIEW: I am a huge fan of the first book, so I was a bit concerned when I heard that it wouldn't be focusing on Harper and Rhen all that much (they are barely in it), but rather on Grey. That being said, I actually liked it more than I thought I would. It dives more in the psyche of Grey, and how he deals with certain facts and his relationship with Rhen. It also addresses that traumatic experiences, such as being cursed and trapped for years, can leave you with a lot of issues that everyone deals with differently. I really liked that they don't just ''asshole-ify'' a charackter.. which I also refer to as the ''ACOTAR-Effect'', but rather say that certain actions may be the result of PTSD. The world building is also deepens, and we see more magic and magical creatures. Yes, there is more romance too! In conclusion, the book surprised me! I thought I wasn't going to like it and then I LOVED it. I forgot about reality and all sense of time, so if that doesn't convince you...

(Also reviewed on For The Love of Fictional Worlds) A Heart So Fierce and Broken picks up where the first book left off – so no, this book DOES NOT standalone – but it does give a whole new perspective to read about – the deliciously stout Commander Grey, who is now on the run from Prince Rhen and Harper; the two people who is the most dear to Grey. Now, rumours are bound afoot in Emberfell, about another heir to challenge Rhen’s claim to the throne; it doesn’t help that Rhen and Harper’s most trusted man isn’t by their side. On the other hand, Grey is trying his best to live a life in hiding, away from the palace and without any emotional attachments. But things, reality for that matter has a way of cropping up, when you least want it; and that’s exactly what happens with Grey. I swear, I don’t want to give away any more spoilers (beyond what I have already given you) but I swear; if you haven’t already picked up this series; you are missing out on a lot! A Heart So Fierce And Broken, killed me and there’s a part of me that hasn’t survived reading it – the fact that Brigid Kemmerer made sure that her readers realise that even Fictional heroes are susceptible to human errors and trust me, that lesson was learned harshly with the pieces of my soul never going to be whole again! Again, per usual; Ms. Kemmerer writes in such a fabulous way; that I honestly wanted to binge – read the book while simultaneously trying to savour it as well! And believe you me; it wasn’t an easy task AT ALL. Also Lia Maria; our princess was somehow the PERFECT choice for our Commander Grey – she gave me a solid foundation and strength to stand for what’s right + unconditional support that he had rarely gotten from anyone else *heart eyes* Also; I absolutely adored that she gave some amazing page time to wonderful secondary characters; and the team that was forged in some trying and traumatic circumstances, now is solid and standing right behind Grey for what seems to be an epic confrontation. And that cliff-hanger? I barely survived the year’s wait till this beauty released and now you want me to wait a WHOLE YEAR for the third book? I mean; how mean can one author be? But I will wait, cause I NEED to know that everything will be okay with Rhen, Harper and Grey (oh dear Lord, please let everything be okay!).

Nachdem der 1. Band letztes Jahr überraschend gut war, ist doch einige Zeit verstrichen, bis ich endlich zum 2. Band gegriffen habe. Grey war schon damals der interessanteste Charakter in meinen Augen, weswegen ich neugierig war, mehr über ihn zu erfahren und die Geschichte aus seiner Perspektive zu erleben. Auch wenn es am Anfang doch etwas zäh war und ich manche Szenen im Buch ausbaufähig fand, so war es doch eine kurzweilige und solide Fortsetzung. Das Cover: generell sind die Cover der Reihe sehr nett gestaltet, aber ich finde sie nicht herausstechend. Dafür sind die englischen Buchrücken der Taschenbuchausgabe besonders, da sie silbern sind und das Licht reflektieren, das finde ich wiederum gelungen. Die Handlung: diesmal begleiten wir Grey und die Prinzessin Lia Mara. Letztere ist eine neue Protagonistin und Prinzessin eines verfeindeten Königreiches. Rhen wird währenddessen immer mehr von Angst zerfressen und Grey musste aus Emberfall fliehen, da er nicht den Thron besteigen möchte, obwohl er der rechtmäßige Anwärter wäre. Als jedoch Gerüchte laut werden, dass Rhen zu Unrecht auf dem Thron sitzt, führt das zu Unruhen bei den Untertanen und Rhen lässt Grey suchen. Als dieser unfreiwillig wieder nach Ironrose zurückgebracht wird, ändert sich einiges gewaltig. Verzweifelte Menschen sind zu allem fähig und plötzlich werden Feinde zu Verbündeten... Bereits im Vorfeld habe ich eher gemischte Meinungen zu diesem Buch gesehen: die einen fand es sehr gelungen, andere waren wiederum enttäuscht von einigen Entscheidungen der Autorin. Auch wenn mir die Charaktere und besonders einige Gespräche untereinander sehr gut gefallen haben, so schwächelte die Geschichte an manchen Stellen etwas. Anfangs brauchte die Handlung lange, um mich vollständig einzunehmen und auch fehlte mir hier die Dynamik. Der Showdown wurde relativ unspektakulär und nur über ein paar Kapitel abgehandelt und einen wirklichen Höhepunkt suchte man vergebens. Manchmal hätte ich mir gerne noch die Urban-Fantasy-Elemente aus dem 1. Band gewünscht, aber vielleicht werden diese im letzten Band noch einmal aufgegriffen. Doch bis auf die kleinen Längen wurde ich gut unterhalten. Es liest sich erneut angenehm und hat man die ersten hundert Seiten geschafft, kann man es auch nicht mehr beiseitelegen. Die Charaktere: diese mochte ich wirklich gerne. Hinter Greys Fassade blicken zu können und ihn abseits von Rhen besser kennenzulernen hat wirklich gutgetan. Er ist erneut sehr loyal, etwas verschlossen, aber trotzdem sehr freundlich. Hier konnte er erneut überzeugen. Auch Lia Mara war eine erfrischende Ergänzung. Sie hat mir zwar anfangs etwas besser gefallen, da ihr Verhalten zum Ende hin doch einen zu großen Kontrast zum Anfang darstellte und ich ihren Kampfwillen etwas vermisst habe, aber ansonsten war sie eine nachvollziehbare Protagonistin. In diesem Band lernen wir auch Noah und Jakob besser kennen. Neu dazu kommen noch Tycho und Iisak. Letztere waren meine persönlichen Favoriten im Buch und konnten die Geschichte mit ihren Charakterzügen und Gesprächen sehr bereichern. Insgesamt habe ich eine andere Geschichte erwartet, eine mit mehr Dynamik und Tiefe. Beides fehlte etwas in "A heart so fierce and broken" und das hat man an einigen Stellen deutlich gemerkt. Jedoch kann ich trotz meiner Kritik eine Leseempfehlung aussprechen und bin gespannt, wie die Trilogie enden wird. Das letzte Kapitel hat nämlich einen neuen, spannenden Handlungsstrang eingeleitet. Von mir gibt es 3,5/5 Sternen.
