I measured from the floor to the top of the panel. **Q: how wide is the gate without extensions?** A: 80 inches wide, as shipped, without extensions. However, keep in mind that when you put it in the Z formation (as pictured) to make it stand alone without propping it against anything, it will then cover a width LESS than 80 inches depending on how you configure it. **Q: I have a 167 inch opening; what do you recommend?** A: you would have to get two - I have to say I purchase a lot of things and this gate is one of the best purchases I have ever made - you won't regret it **Q: WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS?** A: Each panel is 20' Wide 29.5" Tall , 4 panels expanded width would be 80 inches but you would have to get the supports I would say if you set up as shown in W or M ( as shown in picture ) you can span 70-74" and still have the gate be steady I have 60 LB Lab puppy and the gate keeps her out of areas we do not want her in . She can jump over the gate if she's determined but that gives me enough notice to stop her from darting out of the door. The gate itself is heavy and stands on its own pretty well. It also arrives fully assembled which is a plus. Finally, it looks much better than many of the other options available.
