Im confused, some reviewers say the letters are painted, others say they are covered in paper. Which is it?

It's painted, not covered in paper. It's really durable too, the paint does not chip. My niece has used it for up to 3 months and it's still the same way it was when I bought it and she plays really rough with toys, by the way.

Will these magnetics scratch a black refridgerator?

It's like a magnet paint on the back, it's not hard or rough. It shouldn't. I have a textured back fridge and haven't noticed any scratches
