There is some carbon content in some of the steel indicated by some slight oxidation as to be expected. It is sharp and beautiful. I have used mine for such tasks on a few occasions and it performed flawlessly. The only draw back is do to the high iron content in the damascas. I can never find where to leave feedback on Amazon nor did I know these messages were there. Both items are extremely heavy, well made and very very sharp. At the same time I love the patterns in the Damascus steel. I used the long sword to take down some small branches and some thick weeds although it is kind of too nice for that function. It easily passed the water jug test - I fill 3 milk cartons about 2/3 with water and in one sweep I expect the water to drain but not to knock the cartons off the bench. All three had about a 4 inch slice and the water came right out. These are great functional weapons. **Q: What is the thickness? And is the sheath included?** A: The sheath is included, and it is about 1/8 of an inch thick at the spine.
