How well do they work?

I would say ok. They worked better on long haired dogs than short hair dogs. To be very honest I thought my dog grooming brush worked much better. What I liked about it was, our dogs felt as if you were playing with them so they allowed you to brush their coat longer than they would with the brush.

are the "bristles" soft enough to use on a maltipoo who does not shed (but attacks brushes...)? he loves being petted, though, and his skin is itchy

Yes lol I use this on my Shar Pei Chow mix and my Boxer "attacks" it only if I'm NOT USING it on her! Totally has transformed the dreaded "mommy has got the brush out- run!" It literally is like petting your fur babies and the amount of hair removed will shock you! HairToday/GoneTomorrow

What is the best tool to use to clean hair off of the brush? A comb can't run thru the thick bristles & running it under water will clog the drain

I use a soft brush to remove the hair. A toothbrush would work, also. I remove the gloves before I clean them. My cats love them.
