It is about the size of a large pancake, maybe 8-9 inches. The Boys really like to put the candles on and pretend to blow them out then serve everyone a piece of "cake"! The pieces are velco on so a little effort to remove.

is it age appropriate for a five year old

I gifted this set to my grandaughter when she turned 2. She is now 5 and still plays with it with her younger sisters. It is a great toy but I would say a 5 year old may tire of it quickly.

Looking for one that doesnt make noise. Does this have any electronic noise or sound effects?

Nope! No electronics or batteries period! We prefer imaginative play toys for our kids and surprisingly, this toy and all it's different pieces get used in so many ways. We've had it for 2 years of very rough play and it has held up great.

Understand it .comes with 19 toppings. Since 2 are missing, how well can a child play with this toy? Are all 19 essential? Thanks very much-

You for sure don't need all the toppings..my granddaughter is 4 and only uses the cake pieces anyway..she likes to serve it to me. So if you can get it for less with a topping missing I would buy it.
