Apparently gastric acid would render the supplement useless since nac has to get to the intestine, at least that's what i read, any comments?

NAC is not rendered useless by stomach acid. I am a physician and we give it orally in the hospital to treat Tylenol overdose. It is the only thing that can completely reverse fulminant liver failure induced by Tylenol overdose.

I see complaints about the smell.. can you leave it open for a bit to make it not so strong? this is for a child

NAC is a sulphur compound. A good quality and potent NAC should smell like sulphur. If you get a different brand that doesn't smell as strong, you are most likely getting a cut (watered down) version of NAC. That being said, if you absolutely cannot tolerate the natural smell of this product, there are some specialty capsules which can isolate off-gassing odors such as enteric coatings and those cost more of course but for some people it might be necessary.
