It did not come folded, so it was flat and ready to use out of the box. Love the mint green color. My mouse works on it, and I can place papers for reference under the plastic screen, which is very helpful when I work. Also, the calendar pages are not dated and empty, so you can fill them in as needed. I love the color. I didn't have any issues with it smelling or not being flat when it arrived. I've had it for over a year now, and nothing wrong with it than normal wear and tear issues. There is some discoloration from it being used 5 days a week for 8+ hours a day, general staining from use, but I might see if the magic eraser will clean it up. I will say, don't put any hot plates/bowls on it, because the clear cover will warp a bit when you do that.
