That's what "hard anodized" refers to. The outside coating is, as far as I know, not toxic, but what's underneath, the teflon, contains PFOAs, and other stuff, which are purported to be carcinogens aka toxins. If you chip or scratch the anodized coating, then you're exposed to PFOAs and not good stuff, just like with non-anondized teflon. At least, that's what I found when I researched it about 10 years ago.
