However as a Windows user I've never had any success using their configuration software, so directly configure these drives myself. As such I'm not sure I can recommend these to Windows users who don't know how to configure drives using Windows or 3rd party utilities. I've marked the drive down a point because of this.I always burn drives in before putting them into use to avoid infant-mortality failures. In this case they came with all SMART values indicating they were new drives with no errors. After exercising both drives for over 24hrs of a steady read/write load they still showed no errors, as healthy drives should.After almost two months of daily usage with backup software I've had no issues and no SMART drive errors for the two 8TB drives. The internal drive (Seagate ST8000DM004-2CX188) is well rated in general so these units should be relatively reliable long term. The enclosures run cool even under heavy load. Don't notice noise during use.To set the drives up this time I used disk partitioning software (in this case EaseUS Partition Master) taking the following configuration steps. It is possible to do these same things using Windows utilities, but not as simple as purpose-built utilities. β€’ Delete all partitions as delivered (saving the factory files first) β€’ Initialize to GPT disk (to support partitions larger than 2TB) β€’ Create single new partition (NTFS at 7.28 TB) β€’ Install a disk icon β€’ Mount the disk and start using ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The product is well made and performs *by R***T on Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on December 1, 2019* I have had at least a dozen different Lacie backup drives and my experience keeps taking by back to their next higher capacity and newer models (I now have 4 of these particular 8TB drives. They may not be the cheapest drives on the market, but they do what they are supposed to do. This drive is referred to as a desktop model, but I carry one of these everywhere I travel. I shoot a lot of photography all over the world and this is where I back up all my information at the end of everyday of shooting.To be candid, I had one of these drives fail back in 2008, when the maximum size one could buy was 1 TB in a portable version. That only took place after very extended use. I use these as backup storage for photography and business documents. In my experience it is never wise to backup to only one drive. Thus losing one long ago, simply keeps me backing up to more than one unit, as a safety precaution. I do not regret being conservative in my thinking; that is to say, backing up t more than one drive. Lacie offers a very inexpensive insurance recovery policy. The charge is just under $15.00 for a five year guarantee that they will repair and recover information from a failed drive, or provide the buyer with a new equivalent drive with the lost information copied to it. I have never had to use this insurance, but one would be foolish not to purchase it when buying new drives. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good with Linux! *by S***O on Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on June 30, 2018* I use Linux Mint 17.3, and this disk works perfectly with rsync and Clonezilla. The only mildly annoying thing was that the disk first shows 0 available space until you run a setup utility in under Windows, which I did to test it. The setup worked fine, and then the entire disk was available, formatted as NTFS. I then tested rsync, which worked perfectly with the original NTFS format. I then reformatted the disk as EXT4, as I'm using it with Linux, and it still works perfectly with rsync and Clonezilla.An interesting point is that it uses the same, exact power and data cables as Western Digital My Book drives. I have a 6TB My Book from WD that works with Linux, (unlike their current 8TB product, which I reviewed with one star as two different units both failed to work with rsync at all, even after I reformatted the disks as EXT4). I can use the same power and data cables with both disks, and they both work fine. LaCie also gives you a mini USB data cable as well as a standard USB. In addition, the LaCie power brick comes with swapable plugs which could help someone traveling outside North America.I can't speak to the endurance of this disk, since I've only had it a few days, but it's been running for about 3 full days backing up several TB with rsync and Clonezilla, so I must say so far so good.
