The Granta Book of the Irish Short Story

A Heart Warming Collection of Stories
I have many books of short stories, Russian, American and this one is my absolute favorite. The stories are pure gems, the characters developed so well, you feel you've know them somewhere. I wished some of the stories would continue and never end, they were so good. I am of Irish descent (a narrowback) and this harkens me to days when I labored along side workers from Ireland here in America, I have known many of them. The surnames, mannerisms, their wit and warmth are a breathe of fresh air in this vary modern world of ours. The stories are simply stated yet have surprising twists, all you would hope for in a short story. I highly recommend anyone to get this book for themselves or as a gift.

Excellent anthology of stories
Anne Enright has chosen interesting stories from Frank O'Connor and Sean O'Faolain to Edna O'Brien ("Sister Imelda") and Mary Lavin ("Lilacs") to those written by contemporary writers such as Claire Keegan and Kevin Barry. This anthology answers the need for a teachable text that well represents the variety of the Irish short story in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries

Best one around
This is the only contemporary collection of Irish short fiction. Enright’s introduction is not helpful as a critical aid. Rather it functions as a display f her own rather formidable intellect.

A great anthology of great Irish writers
I enjoyed most stories in the book and I gave it away as a gift and bought another to give as a gift to somebody else.

Excellent book. I've been looking for a short story ...
Excellent book. I've been looking for a short story anthology for my Irish Studies class for some time, and this one offers a nice variety of styles, from contemporary to more traditional, from well known writers to perhaps some of the more contemporary.

The contemporary Version
This is another Irish short story book out there with great stories from earlier in the 20th century, but this one is its equal with more modern, but still country charming in spots. Just get it.

Tiny print
I bought the Granta Book. I have not yet read it because the type face is so small and cramped. Very disappointing.

I also bought this for a devotional meeting, but did not use it as the stories were a bit too long. But it will be a great read.
