Monster Scales And Modes: By Dave Celentano

Don't waste your money.
This book has little to no explanation of the content. How do the apply the patterns to different keys? Does the pattern one only work on a certain fret? Does pattern 2 work on a different fret? if I am playing in the key of "A" why would I start on F#? Just because the pattern contains the note A, it doesn't mean it's in the key. It could be any key. If the major scale is W W H W W W H why am I going from fret 4-5 which is a half step H W H W on pattern 2? there is literally no explanation for this. What do I do if I want to play in another key? Which pattern do I use? I have been playing for 20 years and don't get the "why" of the patterns. If you are going to spend the time to write a book and teach a large audience, do it right. I do not recommend this book.

Confusing
Not beginner friendly, but still seems to be useful for learning guitar. Lists one simple scale, and then throws you into complex scales and practicing solos, without telling you which direction to play them, any start and stop points, and makes it very confusing, as certain scales given don't make sense played from certain "roots." Hopefully I can find a resource to help me understand this book.

Just the scales and modes - no hand holding
My guitar instructor recommended this book. He is using it to teach me the various scales/positions and some modes. This is somewhat more of a reference book than a teaching book. If you are teaching yourself, you may be disappointed.

Only one pattern for exotic&alternative minor scales
Very solid helpful book. It gives the 5 patterns of the major/minor/pentatonic scales. Very easy to read and large print with easily foldable pages. The reason I gave it 4 stars was that unfortunately it does not give the five patterns for the exotic and harmonic/melodic minor scales. For a beginner it could be difficult. But hell this books beats surfing youtube or the internet for all patterns and variations!

Awesome
Just the first page alone was worth the price of this book for me!

Confusing
Very disappointed. The introduction to this book states: "No prior music theory is necessary, since every section is broken down and explained very clearly". How fundamentally untrue. Very confusing, no real meaningful explanations of the various concepts addressed.

Very good reference.
Lots of scales and modes a bit of theory... A bit more would have been nice but good reference book for sure.

How to lose interest in ten pages...
Cover art appeals to young students. Subject matter good for cloning thousands of young guitar players who have no actual musical training.

Nice idea, poor publishing
Such a great idea let down by disastrous graphics, the note positions get lost amongst the fret markers, frets and wires. The scales patterns are the essence of this book, such a shame they don't stand out in a way that simplifies rather than confuses.

Takes the fear out of Monster scales
Excellent book. Don't let the cover scare you, this is a serious subject treated in a fun way. Very clear and concise. You can get this information on the web but I prefer to have it in hard copy.. Extra scales from different cultures included, He has done a comprehensive presentation of all the scales. Really good reference work for your bookshelf.

Too many hard to read diagrams
Confusing diagrams repeated unnecessarily. I think I'll write my own much simpler and clearer book.
