Book of Old Silver
Bought this as an unread book but with maybe slight damage, when it arrived it was almost Mint, so the description was spot on. The Book itself is extremly informative and just what i was looking for.

An excellent informative book covering a wide range of marks
If you collect silver this book gives a wide range of information. It covers the various town marks of Britain, France and Germany, with a large selection of makers marks. It also covers a wide selection of 18th & 19th Century American silversmiths. If you buy a piece of pre-1900 silver you can have fun with this book finding out who made it, where and when. Most enjoyable and useful

This is a compendium of knowledge about the making and use of silver flatware and holloware from medieval times to the current period, with a complete listing, 250 pages worth, of silversmiths' hallmarks found on silverware, including items made from unregulated silver to coin silver to sterling silver, and includes information about English, French, German makers as well as those in the United States and other European countries. Sheffield was the original enter of the manufacture of Sheffield Plate, a method of silver plating items that ended in 1838 in England, and lists of platers marks are included, as are instructions on the care, cleaning and maintenance of various silver items. The seller was concerned that the book might not have been in as good condition as it had first thought, but a tiny tear in the spine of the bookcover was expertly repaired and some surface stains of unknown origin on the back of the book cover were removed by me in a few minutes by a judicious application of UnDo, a commercial product that is wondrous in its ability to remove adhesives, traces of adhesives, library labels, and miscellaneous unwanted items adhering to the surface of a page, while leaving no stain or residue after treatment. If UnDo is unavailable to you, I also use and recommend the use of a commercial grade of rubber cement solvent, which is made of a high quality grade of the chemical Heptane, and works the same way as UnDo and leaves no residue or stains. This was the last available copy I could locate of this book, and it is exactly what I wanted, and in better condition than I anticipated. I appreciate the efforts of Paper Tiger Books to ensure that I would be happy with this purchase, and I certainly am.

Somewhat older book now but serves its purpose for those interested in various silver eras and cultures. As with any reference work there is always good value and something to learn !

The photography in this book is minimal, black and white and grainy. Extensive and interesting background information, though (126 pages worth). VERY extensive coverage of maker's marks for all countries. Some marks are so small as to need a magnifying glass, however. (Hence the four stars)
